Multi Vitamin?
Can't Post
Does anyone have a good multi vitamin recommendation? I have always used the GNC Mega Man, but I have run out, and was wondering if I should switch it up...
Thanks!

You know, some people are vitamin snobs and will talk about the fillers, the 'source' or 'form' of the vitamins...but as far as I'm concerned it's pretty much like lightbulbs (or handlebar tape to put it in triathlon terms).
I'd go with the cheapest house brand at Wal-Mart or your grocery store.

I've tried a lot of different ones - Ola Loa (vitamins that you drink), Emergen-C (same, but cheaper), GNC vitamins, Centrum, and the generic brands I've bought at Costco (single multivitamins, and they also have boxes with individually wrapped "packs" of vitamins you can take each day). Apart from the taste (Ola Loa orange ones taste pretty good), I have never been able to notice a difference in how I feel or how I train when I'm taking one vs. another.

I tried the TwinLab Daily One caps and hate them...capsule form causes severe nausea when it dissolves, as all the stuff hits your stomach in a matter of seconds. I have been using Alacer's SuperGramII for years and like it a lot. Very slow release, no nausea, good balance of nutrients that doesn't mess with me, etc.

I usually preferred most generic brand multi-vitamins. If you're in a hurry, I second the Emergen-C, especially if you hate swallowing pills.
What I have found to work best though is just keeping a balanced diet. I used to take a lot of vitamins, but I heard (I don't remember where and am not absolutely sure of the validity of this) that many of the vitamins you get from a multi-vitamin are not as good for you as their counterparts found in food (and I'm talking natural food here, not McDonalds). The vitamins in foods are more easily broken down by your digestive system, and are more natural to the body. So I prefer to eat a balanced diet of natural, non-processed foods (with some exceptions of course, nobody's perfect), and have just given up on the multi-vitamins.
Of course, as with anything else, what works for one person doesn't always work well for another. If you prefer taking a multi-vitamin to get in everything you need, though, I would recommend sticking to more general brands (ie Centrum) as they contain mostly the same vitamins and minerals as more expensive brands.
Sorry for the lengthy reply :)

Flintstones vitamins. I've been taking them for as long as I can remember and I don't plan to stop. Just stay away from the purple grape ones. They are terrible.

I take Centrum Performance - 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 late in the afternoon.
It's one of Dr. Oz's recs (he's on Oprah now and again - sorry, I know that could cost me my ST and/or Guy card, but I watch her sometimes). Anyway, the thinking is that with water soluble vitamins, your body doesn't store what you don't use (you pee the excess), so why take a huge amount all at once? I've seen some brands sold this way (AM & PM), but I just break the regular ones in half. If nothing else, it gives me a psychological boost for afternoon/evening workouts.

I can't recommend anything about which vitamins or minerals. 99.9% of the stuff on the shelves are the same. Prices vary depending on the "package" and "marketing". look at the ingredients and get what you need. Most "propherity blend" stuff in those are snake oil! Stick to main vitamins and minerals.
Once a doctor told me a cup of cereal with 50% of multi vitamins and minerals would be more than enough. if you are a couch potatoe or a 36 hour training IM pro your vitamin and mineral needs don't change. only thing determines is your DIET and AGE.
(don't take my word on this ask to your doctor!)

I use the Multi-V by First Endurance. I will say that because of its price I primarily use it only on hard training days or races. it claims to increase endurance due to various additives. Cannot say definitely if this is true but I know alot of it is pyschological. For a daily vitamin, I use the generic vitamin C, B100 complex and vitamin D. this seems to work well for me and keeps my cost down

I'm not taking any currently, but usually pick one that at least has a USP seal on it.
May or may not REALLY mean anything, but I'd like to THINK so :)
Other than that, unless you KNOW you're deficient in something, most will be very similar.

I use hammer's line, not sure if they make a difference or not, interesting study was commented on in the book "in defense of food" where the author determined that supplements/vitamins do not actually make you healthier/live longer although by and large the people who take them tend to be healthier and live longer due to their lifestyle so that it is good to be the type of person who would take supplements. Go figure.......
Hope is not an effective strategy......

You gotta have a pretty lousy diet to need 'em. How 'bout some fruits and veggies and a little meat (for B12) and some wheat germ for a little extra E. A little sun for D, except maybe in the cold winter climes where a little vitamin D or cod liver oil might be necessary. Additional C for extreme endurance athletes might have merit, but lots of data indicate that extra C is counterproductive for every day folks.
Turmeric, resveratrol, Fish oil and other Omega 3s MIGHT be helpful.
I get mixed info about mitochondrial supplements like CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid, carnitine......

I always have to wonder with vitamins and fortified cereals, how much we actually absorb. So many vitamins bind if the cations and anions are right - Ca and Fe are an example - like TOTAL cereal has mega amounts of both of those, but they bind when together so you essentially get nothing... (I realize these are minerals, not vitamins, but couldn't think of another example... as most vitamins are water or fat soluble and the water soluble, extras of them don't matter, theyr'e just excreted, and fat soluble it'd take a mega overdose of it to cause harm)

I take Damage Control Master Formula (
http://www.masterformula.com/).
I have been taking it for over 8 years. I am not paid by them or anything. I take it becuase it works. Check out their website. The founder of the company, Mark Sisson, is well respected in the triathlon community, and, like me, will personally reply to your email questions. I can write a complete dissertation but best would be to read the website. The guy knows his stuff.
I bet he will chime in as soon as he is made aware of this thread.

I have no doubt that Master Formula works but $129 for a 30 day supply is steep, it kinda limits his client base. That is a lot of money on top of all ther gel's, bars and protein etc that most people buy each month when training.

You get what you pay for really. The ingredients he uses are much better than other companies. I don't know, people pay $4.00 a day for a starbucks coffee, or $4.00 a beer at a bar, or that much for parking, and $40.00 - $100.00 a week to wash and detail their car.
Here in San Diego, you pay $7.00 to $10.00 per swim workout if you pay per workout.
If Mark has not chimed in yet, I am sure when he reads this, he will elaborate more. Again, just tell you what I use.

I've used Country Life MAX for Men for the past 6 or 7 years. Usually have to buy it online. Ever since I started this, the frequency of colds I get has been cut in half. (from about 4 per year to 2). FWIW, I'm a 36yo MOP.

Quality control costs money. Just because a label says the multi has something, that does not explain the entire supply chain. The minerals and vitamins could have been sourced from places with less than strict oversight and guidelines. It is funny to me that many people will obsess over where a bike is made but there seems to be little consideration for where thier vitamins come from...
Certainly, paying more for a supplement does not guarantee the purity of it but it is safe to say that the lack of costs could be a sign post worth paying attention to.
