Before you starting worshiping him, you might want to remember how Lezak won the race for US.
Phelps was good, but Lezak was the true star in that relay.

It's too bad the his 8 gold medals overshadow everyone else's performances. It'll be a while before something can do what Lezak did in the relay.
It truly was miracle in water!

Lezak was clearly not happy hearing how Phelps said to the relay team that they need to keep his hopes alive on the pool deck.
Hence his statement about how he didn't swim for Phelps, but for USA,etc ...

Where is the story that tells about those conversations?

I agree with you somewhat. Lezak played a HUGE part in winning that relay, but it takes 4 guys to win a relay and 4 guys to loose it. Phelps didn't win it alone that is for sure, but Lezak didn't win it alone either.

I don't have a problem with a relay guy saying we need to win to keep "his" hopes alive. . heck, I would want to win to keep anything alive. . . I would swim hard for another teammate just as I am sure Lezak did. . He probably wasn't thinking about Phelps 8 gold medals at the time when he was closing on the French dude in the final 50 meters, but I bet he was thinking that he needs to catch and beat the French dude for the USA and his relay team. It is an awesome responsibility to anchor a relay team. .you feel as though it is your responsibility to hold off anyone if you have the lead and to catch anyone if you are behind. No matter what the time gap.

Does anyone know where Cullen Jones was during the celebration????. . it was as though he disappeared.

He shows up a few seconds later. In a Today Show interview, he says he has swam to the ladder to exit the pool and was making his way back over to their lane.

I wondered that as well but one of the overhead replay shows that he was on the side of the pool down near lane 1 so he could have a good viewing angle on the touch. Other replays show him joining the celebration from off screen and coming from the direction of lane 1 as well.
