Longhorn 70.3 Can't Post

Fellow Longhorner’s,

Seeing how crazy and costly the cost of flying a bike to an event has gotten, and given the fact that I am a exercise physiology Grad student at UGA = LIMITED INCOME. I have decided to break the trend and drive the long haul from Atlanta to Austin. I am trying to see if there is anyone who is interested in saving some money on taking their bike on a plane. I will be heading through 3 major cities and all along I20, I could pick your bike up and deliver it to the race and back to your house without you even having to worry about taking off the wheels! The 3 cities are Atlanta, Birmingham, and Jackson or if you lived somewhere between Atlanta and Austin along I20 we could also work something out. Ideally the pick up would be somewhere close to I20 as this is the interstate that I will be traveling along. Obviously I am only one person and will only be able to handle a few bikes. Basically I am just trying to cover the cost of gas to the event. Please PM me if this is something you would be interested in.

-Donny

I, too, will be driving to Longhorn, but only from San Antonio. You'll likely beat me there, though; traffic heading north is horrendous. Drive safely, and good luck at the race.

Thanks,

I am definitely looking forward to some BBQ after the race. Hope you have a great race as well.

For those of you that have done the race before - what is the run course like. I have heard kinda hilly, with one big "quad hill" (how is that), and how much running is on grass vs. pavement.

It's rolling hills, Quadzilla is about .33 of mile, 7% grade or so on grass... Most of the course is on pavement, with 3 miles of the 13.1 on grass, dirt trails. Good footing though....

I just did vine man, it seems a lot like that minus the grass/dirt trails...

The run is fairly fast on the front side of the loop, but the back side is a bit rough. Last year was crazy hot, and there is very little shade on the back side of the run. The big hill on the grass was tougher on the second loop as there was significantly more traffic. If you are up near the front of the race, you will feel a bit alone toward the end of the first lap, but it's not too bad. The second lap passes through all of the crowds, so you can get a motivation lift there. Hope that helps.

Ian

Is the backside rough just because of the "no shade" or the terrain?

No shade...of course, we had a heat index of 104 last year, which made everything exponentially more difficult.

Looks like mid 80's for next weekend right now, with low humidity....That'll make a big difference if the forecast holds true...

Hey Keith. You may want to change this sentence from the bike course description:

Quote
Texas may be the Chip Seal State, but these roads are in great shape.

I drove the course a few weeks ago (unfortunately I couldn't bring the bike from Houston that weekend) and from what I can tell the pavement quality is subpar at best most of the way. Very much reminded me of the back side of the Ironstar course out in Grimes County.

Other than that I'm really looking forward to the race this weekend.

I'm still surprised that people would say this. Most of the course is really good pavement. There is about 10 miles of chipseal, but that chipseal is good. The rest is smooth. There are some areas with cracks, due to the fact that it hasn't rained here since june. The soil has just dried up so much that it's constricted and caused the roads to crack.

It's amazing. Blake Manor was beautiful until July. Then, the road started to crack. I chose it because of the beautiful pavement....now, they've had to skim coat small portions of it.

Is it 56 miles of perfect pavement? No, but I'm not sure I've seen a long course tri with perfect pavement....

I've been out there on a daily basis. There are a few potholes that we're going to coldpatch ourselves, but will wait until Friday to do it.

Keith's email yesterday said it was still upper 80's and to expect mid-80's on race day.

Re: Longhorn 70.3 [KJ] [In reply to] Can't Post

Keith,

After having done the race yesterday and now having actually ridden the course on a bike, please accept my apologies for my comments above. I think it comes down to the fact that from side to side most of the roads on the course are uneven. When traveling those roads in a car it makes for a very bumpy ride. However, when riding the course on a bike it wasn't too bad. Except for a couple of sections (notably the second portion of Hogeye) the pavement was really good. I did notice quite a few cracks in the pavement but they didn't really effect things too much.

p.s. What was up with the swim course?
