Long Beach
Can't Post
Or around there.
We have a track cyclist here who is doing one semester at Cal State LB who is looking for a room to rent from next week to December. In December he leaves for Tasmania, Melbourne and Beijing for some track racing. He'll be going to class in the afternoons and training at the velodrome at Carson in the mornings (or doing a road ride) and studying.
For the road riding, would being closer to Long Beach be better than Carson? I'm assuming so. Any places to stay away from? Even better--anyone have a room to rent for a few months??? Super nice kid and who knows, he may be riding in the 2012 Olympics.
TIA.

I would not suggest he live in Carson. It's very industrial and pretty close to being ghetto. I would look in Long Beach or anywhere else in the South Bay (Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes). He will have better options for road riding in those South Bay areas than Carson.

Carson is pretty much the hood. Long Beach would be better, although much of Long Beach is the hood as well. Make sure he asks a local before choosing a place there, as the good and bad parts are sort of checkerboarded all over the city.
Also other parts of the South Bay will work too. Redondo or Torrance perhaps. Good luck.

Cathy:
Carson- Maybe but then all his road riding will be on Palos Verdes and there's a decided lack of scenery and coastal comfort there compared to LB.
Anywhere near the water in Long Beach is OK but further south (like Belmont Shore or Seal Beach or even Los Alamitos) is WAY better.
"The Beach" is my undergrad alma mater and I raced bikes there and most of my USCF career was in SoCal so, for what it's worth, he will be doing his road training on PCH or around the PV Penninsula/Hills. He can ride to the velodrome but he'll be riding through Wilmington and on the river trail a bit-not at all scenic and a bit sketchy safety wise.
I've been up here in the Bay Area for the last twenty years but I'm sure he can find something near the LBSU campus or for a bit more rent, out near the water.

Cathy,
I work at CSULB in the ITS Department but I live about 10 miles north east in Orange County. Anything west of the Long Beach freeway is a bad idea unless you travel for a long way to get past the industrial slum area. Same thing for the north side but that gets worse the closer you get to LA. The university is on the east side of Long Beach in a middle class area. Lakewood, Seal Beach, Buena Park, etc are decent middle class towns to the east of Long Beach and within a few miles of the school. There's a lot of affordable housing close to downtown but the area is such that you really need to see it in person to decide if you want to live there. But then when I was younger, Ilived in places that I wouldn't even want to visit as an adult.
Here's the URL to CSULBs off campus housing page which might be of some help:
http://www.csulb.edu/.../off_campus_housing/
He should enjoy it here, there's some pretty good riding in the area and a lot of fixed gears around campus lately.
