Lonestar (Galveston, Texas) a Full IM in 2011? Can't Post

Not to feed the rumor mill, but several sites have mentioned that the Lonestar Half in Galveston will be a full IM as early as 2011.

Has anyone else heard anything like this? The organizers last said they had no intention of expanding the distance.

Texas is overdue for one. perhaps you could be a bit more specific about the 'sites' you've seen this on?

Sorry, i sure hope not given the course area. Little Galveston island not conducive for an IM, running around the hotel property enough of a beat down with all the turns.

Hmmmmm - I was thinking the "big announcement" about Lonestar would be about another recent topic here.

Keith has said in the past his wife would divorce him if he tried to do a full anywhere.

Galveston is basically in my backyard though, so I can't say I'd complain!

I heard somewhere that KJ was working with the City of Galveston to do something like this... As this would be virtually in my backyard, I cannot complain at all (however, my husband might have a different opinion).

The road all the way to surfside is actually wonderful now - newly rebuilt after IKE. It is ~76 miles to Surfside and back from Moody Gardens, so they could do a 1.x lap course for the bike. It would be neat to run on the seawall to the east end of the island and back - plenty of "scenery", and actually probably pretty easy to do without shutting down too many streets (i.e. big wide sidewalk along the seawall - come to think of it, that wouldn't be a half bad place to run, especially after dark).

How do you fly into Galveston?

Hobby Airport is just off of I-45 (the interstate that goes through Houston and ends at the ocean in Galveston), on the south side of town. It is probably 45 minutes or so from Hobby to Galveston. Intercontinental is the larger airport, easily accesible to 45 as well, but it is on the north side of town, so probably a bit over an hour from that airport to Galveston....of course all of these estimates don't include lovely Houston traffic. Don't arrive between 6 and 10am and 3 and 7pm.

You'd have to fly int Houston and rent a car. You would fly into Houston (either Hobby or IAH) and then drive to Galveston. From Hobby, its less than an hour drive.

OK...thanks...looking at a Spring half Ironman and trying to pick between St. Croix and Wildflower, but Lonestar sounds OK. Wildflower is the cheapest for me as it is just a few hours drive from my corporate HQ so it literally only costs me 1 vacation day and no airfare depending on what is going on at HQ and my need to be fly out there which lately seems to be around once every 5-6 weeks. St. Croix is fun, but realistically costs me 4 vacation days, $800 of airfare, plus 5-6 days of hotel...its more like "real vacation". Lonestar would be somewhere in between the two in terms of vacation days and flights.

One plus about Lonestar is if you fly to Hobby, Southwest is the biggest carrier in/out of that airport. They also happen to be the cheapest airline to fly your bike. If you fly continental, you'd most likely end up at intercontinental airport, and likely have higher fees to bring your bike.

St. Croix and Wildflower wouldnt even compare to Lonestar. Planning on St Croix 2010 given rave reviews from friends.

I have only done Lonestar (2007) of the 3, but rank it near lowest among all races i have done. Maybe its cause its Houston metroarea, very humid, very rainy. Didnt like the run course in 2007 and it was a 2 lapper then, now its 4 laps in the hotel grounds, turn after turn.

I bet it is about ~100 miles 'if' you went Galveston to Surfside to Hitchcock, and then 'if' you could take the causeway back to the island. That's a really big 'if', but it would be one big loop with some guaranteed wind and harldly a hill one...unless you count the surfside bridge and any 'bridge' on the causeway.

I'd welcome IM Lonestar since I live in a 'burb of Houston.

BT had a short discussion on it recently.

A couple of the local club sites (BAM and Houston Racing) have been talking about it a lot lately.

I'd love to see it as well. 30 minutes from my front door. Sleep in my own bed, race an Ironman, sleep in my own bed again. And leave the bike case in the garage.

Man, Keith. That was sure a buzz-kill. You couldn't have let the fun go on for a couple more days?

Half of Texas was ready to sign up. You could have been the one to tell Roadhouse "you are an Ironman!" ;>)

Oh well.
