Kona UP Run Report - Warning Partial Nudity Ahead. May Offend Some/Many Can't Post

I had posted this up on one of the dedicated Kona Threads, but this is far too important to leave buried in there, so I have given it it's own thread. Again, I all repeat the warning, what you see beyond this point may offend some/many, so you have been warned!

You know that you have been all waiting for it. Truly the highlight of IMH race week. Forget the Expo, the Cervelo P4, the Banquets, the training seminars, the free hand outs and shwag, hanging at Lava Java, morning swims, rides on the Queen K, the star athletes signings and sitings, this thing at the end of the week called the Ironman Hawaii World Championships, the main event of the week is the Under Pants run. This year was yet another record turnout on what has been the best morning of the week weather wise - sun up right away and nice and warm from the get-go. Record UP participants and massive crowds of gawkers along the way. The people in town from the huge cruise ship that just docked must have thought they had landed on the island of weirdos. Anyway, it was all great fun and raised a good amount of money for a great Charity - the Big Island Special Olympics Fund. Many thanks the founders and leaders, Paul Huddle, Roch Frey and the rest of the Multisports.com crew. Pictures below:

A well placed Oakley logo!

Underpants Run Co-Founder Paul Huddle, in his pre-UP run formal attire, looking very suave, surveys the scene in front of Pacific Vibrations - Ground zero for all of this madness!

My lovely wife, Paolina Allan and Amanda Lovato. Amanda notes that it's all about the over-the-knee compression. Apparetly, this is the must-have compression item and you can pick these latest compression socks up at Wal Mart for $1.99!!

GU was a "Sponsor"

Onto the home-stretch on Allii Dr. Note everyone's amazing leg lift - must be a combination of running nearly naked and having compression socks on!!

Nice Coconuts!!

Elvis was there!

OK now back to all of that other far more important stuff that goes on during race week at IM

This reminds me of the local nude beach. It sounds tantalizing, then you realize nobody you would actually want to see is there.

edit: no offense to the participants, I'm just sayin'.

You have vastly underestimated my level of depravity if you think any of those photos offended me.

Shawn,

The UP run is getting so big that there can be people there, that you don't even know are there! :)

I think that Tracy and Paolina may have been the only two Pro Women in the UP run.

Re: Kona UP Run Report - Warning Partial Nudity Ahead. May Offend Some/Many [Fleck] [In reply to] Can't Post

Fun! I really think the run is fun.

But it also always makes me wonder about the different standards in different societies...

While in north america it seems ok for a woman to lay on a beach wearing next to nothing (hot chick) it is considered bad taste if a guy is wearing anything else but a loose-fit board-short (otherwise he must be gay).

Coming from Germany that seems like very double-standardish to me.

Pesonally I can´t stand the feel of a wet board short on my legs. Even worse, a wet board-short with sand in it. yuck, yuck, yuck. I hate the tan-lines, too. (No, I don´t go shopping in my speedos... just swim and lay on the beach).

I know, it´s just different cultures... you guys are just prudes :-)) Like the guy who locked himself in in the toilet to change his bathers... Like there were any women in the locker-room anyway...

Always a good laugh among the euros. Maybe we should stage a women-in-mini-bikini-men-in-grandpa-undies-run in Frankfurt?

Re: Kona UP Run Report - Warning Partial Nudity Ahead. May Offend Some/Many [Fleck] [In reply to] Can't Post

You can't talk about the UP run without referencing the original race! partly because the rules by Paul Huddle are so funny. and I thought everyone was supposed to do it in tighty-whities!

( from http://www.multisports.com/news2.html - scroll to the bottom of the page)

Actual Date: October 1st, 1998

Image: Innovators Tim Morris, Chris "Slice" Danahy, and Paul Huddle (left to right) salute the crowd in front of Lava Java after the inaugural Underpants Run.

The first worthy memory comes from the inaugural "Underpants Run". With the potential to eclipse the reason everyone goes to Kona on a full moon in October, the event went off without a hitch. Starting at the lobby entrance of the King Kamehameha Hotel, three brave visionaries exited an unmarked rental van clad only in their newly purchased Fruit of the Loom "tighty whities", running shoes, and the obligatory heart rate monitor. Also known as "mommy underwear" (because many men begin their first foray into the world of undergarments with the influence of a mothers purchase), these briefs looked a close relative of over-sized white swim suits. In a parody of Euro-tri-dress-code, these three explorers headed out into a new frontier of event genius. Now, on the Thursday before Saturday's Hawaiian Ironman, you to can report to the King Kam (in your underpants) at 8:30am and participate in a protest, of sorts, to this horrific garb thrust on the unwilling locals in Kailua-Kona.

The inaugural event's course exited the King Kam's drive way, took a right on Alii Dr. and, after taking a slow loop around the cul de sac of ‘The Pier', the run continued down Alii all the way to Lulu's Restaurant (approximately at the 1.25 mi mark) where the course made a u-turn back to roaring applause at Lava Java. Overwhelming response along the way was positive with the occasional look of disbelief. The three participants shouting "Halo! Ya, Germany! Halo!" along the route caused spectators to either fall over with laughter, shout back encouragement, or cringe in disgust.

Already lined up for next year, don't miss your opportunity to join in the festivities on October 21st, 1999 at 8:30am at the entrance of the King Kamehmeha Hotel.

Event rules:

1. Any version of "mommy underwear" is permitted. Good sources include three- packs of Haynes, Fruit of the Loom, or BVD's.
2. No boxers, long underwear, or stylish Euro-bikini briefs permitted.
3. Route must be completed by either running, walking, or crawling. Heart rate monitors, black or argyle socks, bad hats, and earrings are optional.
4. While this event is considered a "moderately paced parade" rather than a "race", pacing strategies are up to the participant.
5. No awards will be presented.
6. No aid stations will be provided.
7. Other rules to be decided as issues arise.
8. Rules committee (Tim Morris, Slice, & Huddle) reserve the right to make things up as they go along.

Yes, one year I was there they "disqualified" one of the older "legends" because he wore blue briefs. Now it looks like they all wear swimsuits....

isn't that Mike Reilly behind Elvis in the baggy board shorts and flip-flop sandals

Indeed that is the Voice Of Ironman Mike Reilly. This picture was taken after the run was done. I can confirm that Mike did the run with the "evil garment' on, in official fashion.

Fleck, That's why I like you so much. You have respect for tradition! The Kona tighty whities I bought are still in my drawer, and Kona's the only time I wear them.

Well that may be the same for my Wal-Mart 3 pack that I bought.

Cathy,

Yes she did. Thanks for checking in. The problem is when they tell you one thing in the Pro Meeting and then they tell you something else when you check the gear in, then something else when you ask an official after the fact. I agree there should be rules and regulations and I am happy to follow them, but when they keep changing it's hard to know what to do.
