Kestrel Talon SL question
Can't Post
I bought my girlfriend a Kestrel Talon SL for xmas and she is having problems with it 'creaking' from the BB area.
She took it to a lbs who works on higher end bikes and they checked all the usual ie: BB, cranks, pedals, seatpost, seat, cables etc and it still creaks intermitently when she stands.
Anyone had this?

She isn't riding LOOK pedals is she? That was the source of my mysterious creaking.

Another thing we do know that the creak is NOT, and that creak is NOT because you are a tight son-of-a-gun. Buying your GF an SL is mighty generous!
I hate to throw this in there since you had it checked already, but, in addition to Look pedals, I've had a loose/inadequately greased chainring bolt do this to me before.

Dont worry too much, there is good and bad news ahead...
first the bad news... the creak will be there for a short while, about 1 month..
Now the good news. and here is a bit of background to help. I work as a materials engineer and did my thesis on bonding of composites and metallics so just about know enough to help.
Firstly check all the torques on the bike from top to tail. The creak could be from an under/overtorqued bolt in the seat stay all the way to the crank arms, use loctite and a torque wrench or just common sence. I switched out many wheels and tyres and pedals to no avail.. the problem is resonance in this case a small creak will "echo " round the frame and sound like the bottom bracket.
Now the bad bit. Carbon fibre bikes are very clean when built and simply need a bit of working in. The parts need to seat in and get a feel for each other. If you re-tighten everything all the time you will increase the creak, just leave it alone and go for it. You will still hear the creak for a while especially when going up steap climbs but after a while when you start getting some gunk on the bike you will stop hearing the creak and start loving the lightness..
enjoy the bike
