Jogging stroller advice - the next phase of my training Can't Post

I'm looking for advice on a jogging stroller.

I'm looking for something that is lightweight, durable, that I can jog with my 1 month old or 3 year old. I've been told that there is no better stroller on the market the the BOB ironman, yet I've also been told that any jogging stroller without a front wheel that swivels is very difficult to use.

I'm trying to find out that I can race a flat half marathon with, yet will also allow me to go hiking and shopping with.

And advice would really help.

Chariot Carriers. I started running with my son with it at 3 months in the middle of southern Ontario winter, started riding with me at around 9 months. He’s 4 now and I still use it with him, commute and drop him off at work with it every now and then. The best part is the trailer attaches to the QR with a ball and cup design, so it fits any bikes. I use it with my P2K, Santa Cruz Chameleon, my wife uses it with her Giant road bike. We got the baby supporter, the jogging, bike (2), and stroller kits.

Suspension is nice, but no matter what brand you get, you’ll get the best ride with bigger rear wheels where the majority of the weight goes.
Head down, thumbs up, give'r

I've got a four year old and a one year old. I would say I do about 60% of my runs with one or both of them. I've actually never used a BOB. For reference, here is what we have. None of the ones we have use a front swivel wheel. I'm 6'1" and about 170 and just tip the stroller back when I need to turn or on a downhill.

We have an older Trek Dash. This one was nice - it had smaller wheels and folded up well to fit into the trunk of a car. This was probably our favorite for convenience. The canvas seat ripped from the bouncing. This has a ton of miles on it. Tires are bald.

We have a newer Baby Jogger. This one is smooth. I liken the two (in performance, not price) to driving a Honda for the Trek and driving a Cadillac for the Baby Jogger. It has bigger wheels and a suspension, it does much better on the trails.

We also have a Double Baby Jogger. That is big and cumbersome, I'm not sure I would recommend it. We grabbed it at a garage sale so it was cheap and does the trick.

We also have a bike trailer (I'm not sure of the name off the top of my head. This is pretty nice but with two kids, there is no defined space and causes problems. This one folds flat and we take it on vacation - it is mostly nice for the beach but can double as a jogger. (If I'm riding with both, they go in it but I usually put one is Topeak on the back of my mountain bike.)

The Baby Jogger rides nice but it too much trouble to fold up. For us, we live across from a big park, so it is not a big deal. I do dread having to take it places in the car. The one thing I would look at on all strollers is storage. My kids do alright for an hour and I can push an hour and a half if they nap a little. The key is having books or treats on hand you can grab and hand to them. There is nothing worse than being three of four miles out with a screaming kid. The screaming does, however, get you home quicker. With that, one consideration would also be to think about the kid's comfort. The Trek was too narrow, my four-year-old doesn't really fit anymore. The newer Baby Jogger is a nicer ride and keeps them happy.

Good luck with the decision. I love running with the kids, it eases the stress at home when you can take them with you. My only problem is, what to do when they are too big to push in a stroller and too small to stay home alone after school.

Personally I hated running with a stroller... You just can't get into a good rhythm.

You do not want a swivel front wheel for jogging but you will need it for the Mall. I had a jogger brand stroller and it was good. I actually prefer the jogging stroller to the regular stroller and that is we use once the kids was big enough especially at Disney etc.

Teach them to ride, then do all of your running on pavement and they can ride along while you run. One of my friends did most of his miles this summer with two of his children (maybe 2nd graders) riding along with him.

I have a Burley Bike trailer that can also be a jogging Stroller. When I run with both my daughters, 9 months and two years, I use it. Easy to convert to a jogging stroller, you just need to purchase the front wheel assembly. They do pretty well in it, as long as the two year old is behaving.

You want the Bob revolution, without a doubt far and away.

The swivel wheel is a must, well almost a must. But note, you don't run with the swivel wheel in "swivel mode". Well you won't do that for very long, there is a lock on there to lock out the front wheel when running but walking you use the swivel.

In retrispect our only regret is that we bought the big old "standard" stroller. We should have gotten a little ymbrella stroller and the Bob Revolution. My wife used the Bob 5 times per week for a stroller strides class so it got a lot of use. I used it on weekends for running, can't say enough good things about it really.

I tried out several of them, the biggest thing that drove me nuts was the inability to adjust the direction the things goes, to give it a front end alignment, if it would pull to one side it would drive me nuts. The ones i tried had no easy adjustment for it but the Bob did, a little wingnut type thingy on the side, a few turns to make it not go one way or the other. I would change it based on the camber of the road actually.

Wow,
I looked at the BOB revolution and it looks like the perfect stroller. Does anyone else have experience with this one?

I would recommend the Chariot Carriers. They are on the more expensive side, however they have a lot of great attachments and accessories to convert it from a jogger<->trailer<->skier. Check out their website. I own the original Baby Jogger Brand (Double) with both of my kids and loved it. I could compact it flat and put it in the back of my SUV for races. My preference is to get the largest set of wheels possible (20"). It helps with rolling over uneven terrain, grass, bumps and cracks in the road. Making the ride that much smoother.

Get the baby jogger with the 20 inch wheels. We have both the single and the double. They are great for running with and shit for everything else. The small wheeled/swivel ones [bob etc.] cant compare

Hey, I searched the world over, literally, and believe the Chariot Carriers are in a league of their own. In the US they are marketed by and badged Trek, but they are the same thing. We have both the single and double. The modular design allows you to take off the jogger front wheel and insert front stroller wheels....you never realize just how far the front jogger wheel sticks out until you have to manuveur in a crowd. We have the jogger, stroller, and bike trailor kits.

Both of ours are for sale as of today! :-)!

Congrats on the baby, and best wishes,

BOB Revolution is the one you want. We've had ours for over a year and absolutely love it. Its our ONLY stroller and we take it everywhere. It folds up easily, is relatively light-weight, and compact enough to fit in the trunk of our Prius. It's easy enough to maneuver with the swivel front wheel at the mall or grocery store and great to run with when the front wheel is locked (you can even fine-tune it so it rolls perfectly straight). I can't say enough good things about it. Oh, and get the water bottle accessory that goes on the handle as its great for your Gatorade or Starbucks!

why dont you email dick hoyt(or rick and dick fame) he has had more experience pushing (an adult) than anybody else I know he may have thoughts on the subject personally I never had a swiveling front wheel and dod fine but I never raced one let alone in an Ironman. I would think a swivel would make the whole thing unstable.

i would put in another vote for the Chariot line of carriers. From running with them, to pulling them on the bike, to their ski accessories, you can not go wrong with their quality.

I'll throw in another nod to the BOB Revolution. We've had ours for almost a year now and love it. We really shouldn't have gotten a standard stroller as we only use the bob. It's lightweight, easy to fold (and very easy to unfold), and it rolls like brand new set of Zipps ;) The swivel wheel is great for everyday use and you'll quickly figure out that having locked front wheel is a requirement for running.

Another vote for the Bob Revolution. Swivel front wheel, suspension, front wheel locks in place for jogging and has a tracking knob to keep it rolling straight when it's in the locked position. We're on our second kid with that stroller and it's still rolling strong!

I view the Hoyt's as the gold standard. I think about how tough they are pretty often. Specifically, if I ever start to think it is getting tough pushing about half the weight he does. It seems to me, that they use a wheel chair though.

I would agree, the swivel might be a problem. Specifically if you go a little quicker and ever go on uneven terrain. I get some good speed going downhill and it could be trouble if a wheel went sideways on a rock. I'd be willing to bet that any decent stroller has there is a lock to keep it straight though. The front wheel of a stroller with a straight wheel would likely start to pull you toward one side of the road as you pick up speed anyway. If you added a little shutter from a swivel, that would make me nervous. On the other hand, if you did go with the swivel, I tend to tip the jogger back for much of the run, so, the front wheel doesn't touch. You still run the risk of having it move on you at some point, though.

Racing with a jogger stinks! Insurance issues are forcing a lot of races to not allow them. I've found you need to put the stroller back on two wheels to go fast but that creates a danger in crowds. You usually have to start at the very back and make you way through very tight space and the clusters of walkers while it thins out. Just be sure to be curtious and cautous announcing yourself as you try to maneuver through to a clear path along the outside. That said, I've put up 18 min 5K's with a jogger but can't even imagine doing an IM. Continued props to team Hoyt.

+1 on the Chariot products. Expensive, but well made. I waited till my boy was a year old before I started using it, both as a jog stroller and as a trailer.

Regarding the rotating front wheel, or lack there of, when you are jogging, a fixed front wheel makes it much easier to control. Making minor course corrections are not a big deal.

We've been working on riding with no training wheels, no real success or even progress yet. Getting her to ride along side of me will give me the long term motivation to get the older one ready to ride.

She got one of those Fisher Price stationary bikes/video games that goes in front of the TV. I need to change the batteries and write a plan to get her up to an hour or two a day over the winter.

Highly recommend the Chariot line. By and far the best on the market. Better than BOBs and worth the extra money.

We had the same thing, then came the motivation as reported here. Now, they whip me pretty good when they bike while I run. We went out for two hour+ run/rides this weekend at a faster than normal pace, and a whole lot of fun too.

another BOB revolution devotee here. Did your exact search a little over a year ago. Only regret (as said above) is that we also bought another travel system. My recommendation is buy the revolution, get the infant (car seat) adapter for your 1 month old and do not buy another stroller until your little one is ready for an umbrella stroller. If you really want to be crazy, you can get the double and cart both!

Best purchase I ever made.

Good luck.

11 years, 3 kids and plenty of New England weather and my Kool-Stop stroller (http://www.koolstop.com/...gstroller/index.php) is still going strong. Sadly looks like the jogger will out live the engine due to growing kids and aging engine! Really like it but have no idea what they go for these days :-)
