What did you swim to get the 6400? Just curious, I've liked other people's workouts they've posted. I'm intrigued by yours.

Have a great night.

hi lana
My 6400 was a combo of two workouts.

If I can remember correctly it went something like this

500 warm up
10x50 stroke 25 sprint easy free
10x 100 pull
300 sculling
10x 50 free sprint the 2nd 25
6x 100

end of first work out

500 easy swim during the change
1000 warm up
20x 50 stroke IM order
300 sculling
4x25 no breather

OK, feeing kinda burnt earlier in the week, so I took off the usual thursday night Master's, nothing at all Friday. Went in Sat AM to Master's, did 3150- felt very relaxing. 2 days down did the trick!

TOT for JAN: 32,750. 2250 to go. At 1st, this seemed like a stretch- I was originally going to do 30k. This was a good exercise- thanks for keeping track!

Re: January Swim Challenge - The Madness Continues! [mlbdenver] [In reply to] Can't Post

long technique set this morning, working on lowering my stroke count. Got down to 12 strokes per 25, which is tough for someone 5'7"!

Anyway...

13,800 + 3,400 = 17,200 officially more than December!

12 strokes per 25? I'm the same height and can't even come close to that. Good on ya.

I had to pull sooo hard, my normal count is about 17, so that was really really hard and not sustainable.

Re: January Swim Challenge - The Madness Continues! [saltman] [In reply to] Can't Post

Ah. Well, while I've got your ear, I've got a couple of questions.

1. Are you using a pull buoy when you do this?

2. Are you doing your entire workout working on this?

3. Have you been doing this consistently for a while? And if so, do you feel it's made a significant difference on your swimming?

I'm curious becuase I'm a swimming neophyte (started swimming less than a year ago) and recently made some huge strides in my 100 time - shaved about 30 seconds per 100 in the last two months - largely due to focusing on efficient use of power per pull. I'm thinking that drills along these lines will really help, so I'm just looking for some justification for my thinking.

Thanks-
Rick

Re: January Swim Challenge - The Madness Continues! [rodio] [In reply to] Can't Post

Rick - definately keep working on drills that emphasize distance per stroke. Eventually you want to be so efficient that you take less strokes per length, but keeping the same splits for a 25 as you would with a 'normal' speed. The person that can swim the fastest with the least amount of energy expended will be faster on the bike/run... keep it up! Also working on one arm drills will help work 'power' on the stroke which is also important when working on distance per stroke... keep it up! PM me if you want specific drills etc.

Re: January Swim Challenge - The Madness Continues! [rodio] [In reply to] Can't Post

No pull buoy

I work with a masters team that uses total immersion tenchniques. To give you an idea, I swam 1:19 in my last IM without working with these guys. Today, I would expect to be between 1:05 and 1:10 while only swimming 8K to 10K per week. So I have made significant progress. I am shooting to get my swim split under 1 hour by IMFL.

The workout was designed to work on stroke count. Lots of "skating" drills and switching drills to work rotation and hip turn. I am not a qualified coach so I wouldn't want to try to describe how these drills should be done. They definitely take some getting used to, but I am stunned at the progress I have made.

As for today, NO WAY could I hold that stroke count the entire workout. We were doing sets of 4 X 25, we set N = to our lowest count, for me 12, then do 25 @ N, 25 @ N+1, 25 @ N+2, 25 @ N+3. Then the same thing with 4 X 50. The idea was to get faster as you added strokes, you want to gain speed by exerting the effort for additional strokes.

Oh and we set N by playing a game in our lane. Our coach gave us a goal number of 13 strokes. We had to try and get the entire lane to average that number 3 times in a row over sets of 4 X 25. At first I was at 15, then just by focusing on rotating and pulling I was able to get to 12 a few times, and 13 consistently.

Re: January Swim Challenge - The Madness Continues! [saltman] [In reply to] Can't Post

Saltman, that is almost physically impossible. At 5'7", unless your wingspan is over 2 m, to get to 12 strokes in 25 m you must be kicking like a maniac or have the hugest tricep propulsive power on the planet coupled with the narrowest hole in the water coupled with a HUUUUGE push off the wall.

I'm not sure that at our height going from these ridiculously low stroke counts had much merit. Chances are that you are substantially decelerating between strokes as you spend lest time in a powerful propolsive phase and you are spending lots of time in a streamlined deceleration. Look at all the top women swimmers in the world for your role models for swim technique, not Hackett and Thorpe. While they have low stroke count, it is because they are tall with huge wingspan. They spend minimal time in a non propulsive glide. Their hydrodynamics are completely different than ours. Joanna Zeiger is swimming the lead men pro pack, doing big stroke rate, not big stroke length...my 2 cents.

Anyway, I am done with the challenge. My son dragged me over to the pool today so I ended up doing my final 2500m to get to 25,000m for the month!

i'm a 5'7 female and during a DPS set, without paddles, i am consistent with 12 strokes per 25. when i am not focusing on DPS and swimming "regular/moderate" i am about 16 per 25. a lot has to do with you hand position and technique, which comes after yearrrrrs of swimming:)

Alas, I am behind. That sucks. Too much running? (Still Platinum, only 3 days to go...)

Re: January Swim Challenge - The Madness Continues! [ksweet863] [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not buying your point totally. At 5'7", if you are doing 12 strokes per length, you are pushing off the wall really hard or kicking really hard (are you doing 2-6 beat kick???). I can do two strokes per length and kick halfway down the pool on each side and post a studly long distance per stroke. If you are 5'7" this means your hand is leaving the water further down the pool than the point it entered when swimming 12 strokes per length (or you have a giant wingspan).

I'm not saying don't go for a long stroke, but there is a point after which you are not doing anything resembling real swimming.
