Ironman of Iraq - Marine Kona Lottery Winner Can't Post

Tulsan trained for the Super Bowl of triathlons, with heroes for inspiration

Not a very aero helmet, but then again I think his real problem is that his seat is too high.

Semper Fi and Hoorah from a fellow USAF triathlete at Al Asad Air Base, just down the road from Fallujah. In case you can't get to the Tulsa link, here is the best part. Hoorah, read on:

THE HONORED DEAD

Each night in Fallujah, Maj. Bill Conner offered up a prayer for three dead friends. The last thing he did before falling asleep was look at their pictures, each of them taped to a wall at the end of his bed.

This Saturday, when the Bishop Kelley graduate competes in the Ford Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, it won’t be for glory. He’ll be doing it to honor those who didn’t come home from Afghanistan and Iraq.

And for his three pals from the Naval Academy — Doug Zembiec, Erik Kristensen and Megan McClung.

“They will all be there in spirit,” he said. “They’ll be there rooting me on. At some point during the run, when I’m exhausted, they’ll get me through.”

MAJ. DOUGLAS A. ZEMBIEC, the legendary “Lion of Fallujah,” died attacking insurgent forces in 2007.

“He was a Marine’s Marine,” Conner recalled. “Physically, he was obviously one of the strongest people in our class. As a person, he had a big heart. He really would give you the shirt off his back. He was rough on the outside, but once you knew him, if he was your friend, there was no better friend.”

LT. CMDR. ERIK S. KRISTENSEN tried to rescue fellow SEALs in 2005. He didn’t make it. Afghan insurgents shot down his helicopter, killing all 16 onboard.

“I was probably closest to Erik,” Bill said of his fellow rowing teammate. “If anyone got too serious, he’d crack a joke to break the mood. A lot of people said he was like a big teddy bear. He was just a great guy.”

MAJ. MEGAN M. MCCLUNG died in 2006 when her Humvee struck an improvised explosive device in Iraq. She was the first female Marine officer killed in combat during the Iraq War.

“Megan was probably one of our best female athletes,” Bill said. “She was on the gymnastics team and on the power-lifting team.

“When she graduated, she got into triathlons. Megan did the Ironman in Hawaii a couple times.

“Everybody, pretty much, at the Naval Academy knew Megan because she had this bright red hair. You couldn’t miss her from across the room or even across the yard. She had a bubbly personality that you immediately noticed when she walked into a room.”

Using the word from Tom D. "HUGE".
That is great he will finish just fine regardless of his access to training.

Does anyone know this brave devil dog? Does he need any thing gear wise? I personally would donate money or forward any of my gear that he may need to pull this off. I am certain that many on this forum would join me in this endeavor.

Semper Fi, Glad to see any Teufel Hunden showing how it get's done.

but c'mon Major, your duty is with your Men; the ones serving under you, supporting you, and carrying out your orders.

You are really gonna skate off to HI while they stay in country and suck on it?

I say NO. If my unit stay's deployed, then I stay deployed. end of story.

Would you really forsake your Esprit de Corps, for an M-dot?

Ever hear of mid-tour leave?

Edit: Should have read the article, okay, 1.5 months is a bit long. Smart ass retraction.

What are you talking about? His unit came back last week. He came home advanced party as the XO of the unit which is standard practice. How many times have you been to Iraq/Afghanistan? He's paid his dues and yours!

Coop,
I rode with him today up to Hawi from Kawaihae. Super nice guy. He needs a new helmet (I think he's wearing an 80's vintage Giro). He also said he needs a USMC flag (he forgot to bring one to Kona).

Major Bill has been coming to my Tuesday night track practice for the past year or so, inbetween his ToD's. Since he has been back to Pendleton I have been helping him prepare for Kona. While he may need an updated helmet, we did discuss some special equipment that he might be using on Saturday in Kona. To see of he ends up using it, you'll just have to tune in and see for yourself.
Also check out his race number, #1775, the birth year of the USMC!!

Great read.

I hope he has a fantastic day out there !

Guys like him deserve lottery slots and good for him ,that he has gone "above and beyond " yet again , to prepare for the event.

Advanced party. fine, and still: good luck to him.

But, since you feel it necessary to personalize things by intimating that I needed my "dues paid" by someone else; I'd really like opportunity to debate this in person. PM me when you get back to Conus, I'm in Solana Beach. I'd like to see how your hours at "altitude" compare to an 8541's.

Out.

OK, this looks like a "blue on blue" to me. I just don't think it's cool to attack him when you don't know the full story. He's in one of the most deployed units in the US military and he's heading back to OIF in 6 months.

No need for the helmet. I'm going to let him use my Spiuk TT helmet. Still need the flag though.
