Ironman at 20??? Can't Post

Is this a good idea?

I am 19 now and I am thinking about doing IMNZ in 2010, which would make me 20 on race day.

I know a lot of people would not think it's a good idea, but I will be at university till I'm 24/25 then I will hopefully get a job at a commercial law firm and have to work massive hours and the dream might slip away.

:-)

Hmmm...3 years of triathlon, one year very seriously. But nothing in the last six months, been embracing the student lifestyle a little too much :-)

Eh, go for it. Just realize that you'll be training a lot and you're going to need to take care of yourself. Recovery will be, by far, your most important "workout", especially because you're young and don't have a lot of endurance experience in you.

Also, for what it's worth, you'll have time to build up to an IM while you're in school, so doing an IM now isn't critical. Your schedule in school will be flexible and will leave you opportunity to squeeze in workouts in random places. Just look at all the people with nine to fives and families who succeed in IMs.

What university are you planning on attending? Do they have a tri team?

Going to Auckland University in New Zealand, I am pretty sure there isn't tri team but I'll check.
Yea, I meant that I wanted to do an ironman while I'm at uni rather than wait till I'm at work.

Looks like the city has a club:

So you're set, either way!

Of course, there's always room here at Cal Poly... :)

Re: Ironman at 20??? [andy12] [In reply to] Can't Post

That's plenty of time for a consistent build up. My best running fitness was at university (off to the domain or down along tamaki drive between lectures), plus the cheap gym at auckland meant that I had good core strength too. Age is less important than well planned and executed training and race day pacing.

THey sometimes have a duathlon at Uni games but there isn't a tri club.

Re: Ironman at 20??? [andy12] [In reply to] Can't Post

Go for it. You're right that you'll likely have more time while still in school.

I did Lake Placid at 20, then Arizona at 22. I'll be doing beach2battleship in nov. as my 3rd (now 23). I missed my "21" year because I was finishing up school (18 credits), and started my full time job. Bad idea to juggle those 2, much less add IM training to it!

Now that I'm pretty well settled into my job, I'm back to training.

With a full year to plan it, and 3 years behind you already, you should be good to go! Training for my first was an awesome experience, and it was definitely easier to train during school than it is now (easier in that I could sleep whenever, train whenever, and do my school work whenever-total training volume is actually higher now).

Good luck!

Yea they do have an aquathon at the uni games. And I would really like to do that. Not sure that sport is the main event at the uni games though ;-)
