Ironman Oregon Can't Post

Ironman in Oregon? Hagg Lake south of Forest Grove is a contender as a venue for the first Ironman Triathlon World Championship qualifier in Oregon
http://www.forestgrovenewstimes.com/...d=121435242102867700

I sort of doubt it would happen as it appears there is little infrastructure around the lake. The town of forest grove is 8 1/3 miles away from the lake.

It is 6 1/2 hours from CdA, which might be too close. I thought they would choose something a little bit closer to CA population such as Klamath Falls or Lake Tahoe.

If Oregon really is being considered, Bend and the mountain lakes area would be a far superior site in my opinion ... lots of ski season accomodations in the off season and a far better area to visit. Klamath Falls ... you can't be serious ... ?swim in stenchful algae choked Klamath Lake ... that would be a gagger for sure!

It's interesting that locaels are now bidding, much like cities do for the Tour Day France, to host an event. It's alomsot ike the Olympics with the site visits and recommendations, etc etc...

So when would the race be? Late August or early September? I think this would be great for me living in the Seattle area, CDA is too early and Canada is too hard to get into.

Man that would be sweet. Hagg lake is about 30 minutes from my house.

Hagg is a good triathlon venue. There are probably 6 different tris there this summer, including, of course, the AG Nationals.

I agree with the previous poster that Bend is a better "tri town", but it's also 3 hours from the Portland airport (although the Redmond airport brings some flights in).

K-Falls, no freaking way---have you ever been there?

I am crossing my fingers for Eugene…not sure where they would have the swim but that would be awesome.

I'd do Ironman Tahoe in a Heartbeat....I would hope that this would include going out of Tahoe via Luther and summitting Monitor Pass like the old World's Toughest Triathlon circa 1985-1994. This was the single coolest race on the planet, but sadly it would be too difficult on the bike for the NAS needs.

Too bad. If it was a "go", it would have been kept secret until the registration opens.

Swimfan ... you must be on drugs, you're way too mellow anymore. The northwest is where the ITU babies were too cold to swim ... do you think this will stop real ironmen in Oregon???? ;-)

I hate to be the lone naysayer so far, but this is a BAD idea. And, I could sleep in my own bed the night before! Hagg Lake is barely able to handle an Olympic let alone a full IM. What are specators going to do? Stand around at Ramp C all day and night? Perhaps they think this would be a point to point race, then it is possible, but not probable. By the way, has there ever been a point to point IM qualifier?

Riding from Hagg Lake would commit you to County Highways, good luck with that. Running a Marathon in the area presents several routing challenges. Where are all the athletes supposed to stay? Why can't there be a push for a California IM qualifier? Didn't they invent the sport? Besides three IMNA qualifiers within a days drive of each other seems silly.

This is a pipe dream at best. As for the Bend area, people need to realize the vast majority of our open water options in Oregon are on Government land and have very little if any major infrastucture within miles of the possible venues. The political and bureauacratic obstacles here would be profound

"By the way, has there ever been a point to point IM qualifier? "

Technically, IM Lou was last year. Swim started up near Towhead Island, which is about a mile from transition area. Athletes walked up to the start, swam upstream for a bit, and then made the turn and swam downriver for about 1.5 miles.

Re: Ironman Oregon [linhardt] [In reply to] Can't Post

It's kinda ironic & disappointing about the constant use of Hagg Lake as the only venue for races with national exposure to Oregon. Back when there was the USTS Bud Light series ~86-88 the folks in Cherryville actually ended up driving the race out of the area because they didn't want any bicycles in their town.

Then when they got the USAT Age Group Nationals there here there was lots of comments & disgrunted comments by folks from out of the area regarding the layout e of the venue regarding folks with their boat trailers etc most of which were/are true.

It would be nice if there was more imagination by OSA in site venue. For us locals who have been doing tri for a long time don't do the local Hagg lake events so much anymore. Just tired. Getting to and from the hotels would be a nightmare, it's totally spectator unfriendly and I don't think it does Oregon justice at all in terms of the beauty of the state.

I personally think central Oregon would be a much more scenic venue & leave people with a much better taste of Oregon than the strip malls & freeway & development that so prevalent out towards Hagg Lake just like what is seen in so many other places though the forest land, lodging airport issues etc make that very hard to do. Dis

I guess its all about money. Barb

Re: Ironman Oregon [linhardt] [In reply to] Can't Post

Can you imagine doing NINE laps around the lake on the bike? Ugh! And as someone else said, what would the spectators do all day? There's NOTHING to do at the lake and it would be a nightmare to get out during the race in order to drive to...what? Forest Grove?? Then to have to get back into the park while the marathon is going on? No way.

Central Oregon would be a MUCH better venue.

edit - Just read the course description. Point to point. That beats doing endless laps around the lake, but I still say Bend is the better choice.

Bend would be pretty challenging with the altitute and hills. Look at Pacific Crest race HIM...nearly kills half the field off after sub 50F swim and a mile of climbing starting at 4500'. Not a race for first timers for sure.

Re: Ironman Oregon [linhardt] [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm hearing Nike is involved at least in part, as well as the OSA (Oregon Sports Authority) and a huge money commitment from the County. A big meeting in late July is planned along with visits by the IMNA folks. Should be interesting to hear their response. As for the course, I'm also hearing a point to point from the lake with T2 at the Nike campus. then finsihing in that area. If so we ARE talking about a point to point IM over a long distance. That would be a ground braking logistical feat. Again, not being disparaging here, I'm all for a cool race in my back yard. But, the realities are sobering at best.

Is this a case of Olympic Trials (Eugene) envy?

I agree with your assessment of Hagg lake for an Ironman distance race. As far as point to point, you may recall that Kona used to be a point to point bike ride. The bike started at the pier and finished about 8 miles away at the Kona Surf.

Man, one of my sisters lives in Forest Grove and works at Nike. I'd be hard pressed to pass up free boarding at an IM.

How about Ironman Hood River or the Dalles? You could swim in the Columbia, bike around Hood River Valley, maybe out to Dufur with a finish in Hood River. That would be awesome!

Might be reading too much into a "rumor article", but they mention WTC and not NAS so this might be another race like Louisville that is separate from NAS. If so, I wonder what this means for NAS longterm if WTC is going to continue launching competing races.

And they put Louisville on the same date as Canada. Will IMO be on the same date as Wisconsin as a means to draw folks away from the popular NAS races? Might be interesting to watch...

Re: Ironman Oregon [Crono] [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd be a little skeptical about Oregon...not from a good venue standpoint as much as the need to get 2,000 hotel rooms, various city commitments ($50,000-$150,000) and then planning the timing (early versus later in the year). My impression has been the WTC has a stronger interest in in Las Vegas, Virginia, Texas and Louisiana (mentioned over the years) with Las Vegas the most likely newcomer.
