Could be a hammy... Do you do any exercises for your legs, and if you do, do you include hamstring exercises as well? (Leg curls, deadlifts). When those muscles get out of balance with your quads, they can definitely cause you some pain.
Could also be sartorius... which is a little more along the lines of where you describe the pain to be.
