Insert your $0.02 here Can't Post

Looking to build a road bike. I have never owned one, it's always been a tri bike for me. Since moving to Colorado I have started riding a lot more since the quality of riding is 100 times better than Houston IMO. Also I have come to realize that I really love climbing which is why the road bike I want to build will most likely be a weight weenie (thought I would never be a WW).

That being said here is what I have so far. Feel free to add whatever components you think I should consider, i.e. frame, handlebars, etc.

Frame - Scott Addict R2 or Look 595
Derailleurs and Shifters - SRAM Red (Already own Red deraillers)
Cranks - SRAM Red, FSA K-Force Light, FSA SL-K Light
Chain - KMC X10SL
Handlebar - FSA K-Wing, 3T Ergonova, Ritchey WCS Evolution SL
Brakes - Zero Gravity
Pedals - Look Keo Carbon Ti
Wheels - Zipp 303 tubular (need 24 spoke count for my PT)
Tires - Continental Gatorskin (want a durable "flat resistant" tire)
Saddle - Most likely Adamo since I love it

Out of all the opinionated ST-ers nobody has any insights or suggestions?

You are running continental gatorskins on ZIP 303 tubulars? Do they make a gatorskin tubular? If so, seems like a strange combo. For training, why not a clincher?

Yeah, it's the Sprinter Gatorskin. I searched the whole Tubular vs. Clincher debates and figured that if my Tubular changing abilities are as efficient as my tube changing abilities then I may as well run tubulars. I have also researched the weight vs. aero topics and figured that if weight is really only an issue during significant climbs then I should go tubular. A lot of the rides I have done involved 5-7k feet of climbing.

I like your build list.

Frame: The Scott is a great ride and so is the 595. I actually liked the 586 better than both but couldn't come up with the coin for it. As far as bang for your buck the SCott is the better deal.

Cranks: I had the FSA and hated them. Very temperamental and prone to dropping the chain. The SLK is stiffer but you can get better cranks for less at that weight. I have and really like the Sram Red cranks. There is a great review of light weight boutique cranks done on the fairwheels bike forum.

Bars: Are fairly personal. I have the Zipp SL Short and shallow and love them. Worth a look.

Good luck with your build, looks great

you building a weight weenie because you have plenty of money and just for fun?

or because of expectations of it being notable faster up a hill?

If the former, looks good except I would go with a selle italia SLR saddle. adamo style is less necessary on a road bike for most people, and its heavy =)

if the latter, i would go down a price point on just about every item, and use a dura ace chain and brakes. certain things are not worth sacrificing reliability and ease of use for 100 grams.

Yeah all of those factors were involved when I decided to build a road bike. I love bikes and I think it would be fun to build a road bike. Although I am not rich I have certain opportunities to acquire product at a discount (no, not a 5 finger discount). And yes even when training I like to feel as though the energy I am expending is being used as efficiently as possible.

I agree with you in regards to the saddle. I used my friends Specialized saddle, not sure which one, it was red and white, and I felt comfortable on it.

I am using ZG brakes because I was going to take them off my tri bike. If I build a road bike my tri bike will sit till next race season.

Looks pretty sweet, a few quick thoughts:

-Consider a road saddle, since you'll be sitting frurther back when climbing, and not bent over.

-ZG's aren't the best stoppers, personally I'd trade a few grams for Red brakes

-IMO crank brands make little difference, but get a ceramic BB

The only two items that I have experience with:

Chain - I have been happy with that KMC chain (and so have the majority of others that have reviewed it on the interweb) -seems to wear well, relatively light and shifts fine

handlebars - I agree it is a very personal choice. I switched to the FSA K-wing about 2 months ago. I am still adjusting to the flat tops. IMO you lose one hand position on those bars compared to traditional shaped bars - right on the bend from the tops as the bar bends toward the hoods. I used to use that position a lot with my other bars but because of the ridge from the to flat area in just behind the hoods, I cant use that position any longer. That said, I think that I am getting used to having one less position and the comfort of the other positions more than makes up for it (or I could be just telling myself that to justify the $200 i spent on them).

I too love the adamo on my tt bike. I avoided it for years (literally) because the thing is so damn ugly. I just couldn't get comfortable enough on anything else so I finally gave it a shot.

For a road bike though, I think you should consider the specialized toupe. It is by far the most comfortable saddle I've ever ridden... a good bit lighter than an adamo too.

My ass has never been more sore than after recently trying the Adamo race on my TT. I just took it off today. I don't understand how anyone finds it comfortable...

Saddles are like that. One persons torture device is anothers' comfy lounge chair. Apparently people have different asses.

Par example... Fizik Arione is the most uncomfortable saddle I've ever ridden. I couldn't make it an hour on my road bike. I ended up riding an hour home COMPLETELY out of the saddle. Despite that, many people rave about it's comfort.
