Inappropriate pre-workout/race food choices Can't Post

Got to talking about this one with some of my friends as we were lining up for the local Fourth of July foot race this morning. I was commenting that fried eggs (really buttery ones) might not have been the best breakfast selection. All of them had eaten more conventionally for the race - pop tarts, bananas, etc., and were a little aghast at my choice. Made a few comments about not wanting to be too close in front or behind me during the race, so as not to be hurled upon or slip on a puddle of hurl. I told them that this was just the latest in my ongoing experiment to find the worst pre-workout/race foods. Top items so far:

  • Biscuits and sausage gravy. (Hands-down winner so far.)
  • Really cheesy omelet.
  • Loads of greasy hash browns. (Went riding with my wife afterwards, and tried to convince her that all of that starch should give her plenty of energy for the hills. Every time she slowed down going uphill, I'd yell "More potatoes!")
  • Bunch o' donuts.
  • Roast beef and provalone sandwich with spicy mustard, chased with two beers, on a hot day.
Anything else that should be included?

BTW, didn't hurl on the race course. Instead, had two slices of convenience store pepperoni pizza after the race, then biked home.

pickles and chip/salsa with a nice glass of milk.

Then again - some local hills have names that were bestowed on them....

we have -
  • Frutty Pebbles (poor Rob)
  • Hamberger Hill (about 4 miles from a McDonalds on a century ride)
  • Nose Vomit (yeah, that looked like it hurt)
  • "The Brenner" (named after the guy who laid in the road in a full body cramp - even had "the claw" as his hand somehow cramped")

There are a few more - but still, avoid the pickles man...

Amateur...

Least damaging: footlong meatball sub w/ banana peppers, jalapeņos, olives and red onions.
Moderately bad: chicken biryani, hot
Worst idea to date: lamb vindaloo, hot

I can second the biscuits and gravy, never a good decision

Are you, or have you ever been pregnant? How else do you explain that food combination?

Panang Curry, extra spicy.

Had a hugemongous bowl of that stuff last week about 5 minutes before running 2.5 miles at tempo pace. Can you say h-e-a-r-t-b-u-r-n?

Oh, yeah, one I forgot - an anonymous (but very hot and tasty) chicken and rice dish made by a Korean houseguest. Had leftovers on one of my run commute days, about 45 minutes before heading home. Really good thing I picked the return route that's got public toilets in four places.

And off-topic, just wanted to say welcome to the radiology department. I'd like to make an offer: if you end up anywhere where I know any of the techs, I'll put in a good word for you. In return, if you and I should ever end up in the same race, perhaps you could try to look like you're working really hard when you go past me.

Even I would not attempt that and I lived in Malaysia and am use to all the curries. However its excellent recovery food:)

If you keep this up with will be worthy guest member of the TriBuddha Multisport Society! Khai use to be a member of good standing until he lost too much weight!

8 cinnamon rolls and 4 eggs. I tried it once, before cranking 10 mile petty loop with some friends. I didn't puke, so it must be ok.

That's a pretty good summary of my own litmus test.

I think that adding in "on a hot day" to some more of your food choices may change the litmus test results..haha.

I had one of my best swim workouts ever after eating 4 chili cheese dogs and 4 cups of mountain dew about 10 minutes prior...it was football homecoming and skyline chilli was giving away free lunch..i went through the line 4 times and then did a 10x500 scy workout all about 6 minutes...it ruled

And to think that my friends were worried about the possibility that I'd barf on the PAVEMENT . . .

I keep telling you, I didn't do it on purpose - it's not like I went on a diet or even changed my eating habits. The drop was simply a result of going from riding and swimming <6hrs/month to a normal training load of 12-18hrs/week.

Do you have any idea how much ice cream I've eaten in the past 30 days?!!!

Yeah yeah sure

I am sure you are secretly turning into a calorie counting trihead who only eats whole grains, kamut pasta and quinoa!

You racing Peach - if so see you at the BBQ place on Lakeshore !

Chips and salsa/nachos - it is a mistake I've made more than once. I've even waited a couple hours after eating them to run but it still doesn't work well.

Bananas always repeat on me too.

Anything high in beans such as lentil soup or Mexican food.

Hey, how's that work for you before a workout? I'll be testing it myself in a few minutes. Just finished a pint of Ben and Jerry's, and will be heading out for another run in a few minutes. (Would rather be biking, but holiday traffic makes me nervous. Besides, already biked out to the store to buy the ice cream.)

Forgot to mention. Best pre-workout food for me is a big chocolate chip cookie and a soy latte. Great workout every time.

I have no idea wtf kamut pasta is... I have herd of quinoa, though I don't believe I've tried it before.

Not decided yet on the Peach. I'll have to play that one by ear. If I am there, I'll definitely meet you guys at the Pig!

Chocolate chip cookie, check. Soy latte, though? I've got a funny feeling that this would fail the litmus test for me, workout or no.

Okay, iPod's done synching, time to run.

Can't say that I've tested a pre-workout ice cream. The night before seems to work well...

Julian threw down this bad boy the day before IMC 2006:

That's SEVEN scoops!

I had a smokie with extra onions and hot peppers just before climbing yellow lake on the IMC course, that climb was not pretty

Also had a cheese sandwich and a stick of pepperoni before another steep long climb, that was the nearest I have come to throwing up while on a bike, while out training.

Try a huge "root beer" float made of Natural Light and strawberry ice cream. There's a guaranteed return trip!
