I value your answers to 3 questions
Can't Post
Hello fellow Triathletes,
I’m doing a little market research and I would value your opinions and insights.
- This should take less than a minute to answer
- All answers will remain confidential and will only be used by me
- Trust that I’m not trying to sell you anything, but rather I’m collecting information
- If you rather not post your answers on the Forum, please PM (Private Message) them to me
3 questions:
1) Typically, how much do you spend on upgrading parts or components on your bicycle (not including race wheels)?
2) When you upgrade a part for your bicycle, the primary reason is:
Please choose one answer
- better fit (adjusting the bike to fit you better),
- lighter weight,
- aerodynamics,
- comfort,
- appearance,
- other?
3) Do you prefer your bicycle components to be separate or integrated (if the integrated system offers weight savings)?
Example:
Separate components in a handlebar system = stem, base bar, aero extensions, elbow pads, brake levers, shifters
Integrated handlebar system = stem, base bar, aero extensions, elbow pads are made as a single part. Then brake levers and shifters are added.
Again, I would greatly appreciate your input.
Thanks,
Tom

Should we assume that question 2 can have multiple answers or are you looking for the number one reason?

Question 2 can be answered either by;
stating the number one reason,
~ or ~
listing the feature based on priority (first item on the list being the highest priority)
What ever is more convenient for you to answer

1) Nothing.
2) it broke/wore out.
3) Separate.
Do you really expect to get any meaningful information out of this? For instance, you fail to specify a time frame or method for determining the answer (average, most, least expenditure, etc.) for question 1.

The answer to #2 can vary totally from one part to another. To take it one step further, sometimes you replace a part for one reason, and that in turn will cause you to change out one or more additional parts to be compatible with the first replacement.

Hi Ken,
First, thank you for your answers.
Now to your question, "Do I really expect to get any meaningful information out of this?". My hope is to gain some information from a focused, educated group of triathletes (I've always been impressed with the ST community’s thirst for knowledge and willingness to share information).
I find challenge becomes, if you make the question too specific, or ask for too many details, the average person does not want to be bothered. At this point, I’m only seeking information on:
(Regarding bicycle parts/components)
1) In total, how much do you spend on upgrading parts?
2) What is the most important feature you look for during an upgrade?
3) Do you see value in integrated components?
Of course I would welcome any addition information that people would like to add.
Thanks again,
Tom

I don't upgrade. I buy a frame and then purchase the parts/components I need.
I've never purchased a "bicycle". I always buy a frame and build it myself.

1) Approx. $500
2) Fit, then aerodynamics
3) Integrated, if it offers a real advantage (lighter weight, better strength, etc.)
