I Hear Stupid People
Can't Post
Conversations overheard this week:
Personal trainer, at my gym, when asked what a healthy body fat percentage is for men:
"12-15%. 12 is really a little low, you should shoot for 13-14%"
Random guys at local running/riding trail:
"I've been working out on the elliptical at the gym at 146 beats." "That's way too high, man, you gotta get that down to the 130s so you burn some fat."
2 Varsity Coaches from highschool with elite athletic programs:
"220 minus age is the formula for max heart rate." "Why do we need to know max heart rate?" "Uh, I'm not sure, like to max sure you don't go too hard, I guess."
Mike & Mike, ESPN Radio Show
"You're a doofus if you ride a bike and wear a jersey with sponsors on it." "Yeah, my kids and I used to have fun rolling down the window and yelling 'Hey Lance' at all those doofuses."
Stupid people are everywhere.

actually, i don't disagree with that comment, I've never understood why people pay 100+ bucks to advertise for whatever company logo is emblazoned on the front/back.
If the company is paying you to wear their jersey, or giving you the shirt for free....different story.

How about a club/team jersey that is sponsored by multiple companies? Is that fair game?
My favorite is the dance classes at the gym where the instructor is doing wild flashdance type moves and expecting the newcomers to keep up. Highly entertaining. I'm so uncoordinated that I'm sure I would pull something and wipe out the entire class. I barely have the white-man shuffle down!

None of those statements are that stupid really. There's some factual truth behind them all.

The fourth example is of stupid people. The first there are merely ignorant. There's a difference.

It's funny that 98% of ESPN's listening/viewing audience sees no problem throwing a 150.00 pro style jersey over their out-of-shape middle-aged torso and parade around the mall with IVERSON on their back.

Gym advertisments for their personal trainers:
"Are your workouts making you fat?"
"Burn the fat right where you want to."
...and people wonder why I don't like most mainstream "personal trainers".

I've never understood this comment. I'm not sure what the real issue is of wearing a jersey....say...with Rock Racing written on it. I wear it because they are a great set of bibs and jersey. They are very comfortable and besides - the logo is cool looking : )
Do you remove all the decals from your frame, your wheels, your running shoes, your running hat, how about the car you drive? Did you remove all the "Chevy" emblems and such from your car? You bought that car, it was not given to you, why advertise for them? Nearly everything you "buy" has a logo or such on it. Do people really remove all these? I don't.

I wonder if Mike&Mike can tell the difference between a real pro kit (like saxo bank), and a local club team kit?
Are club riders lame for wearing their sponsors? Around here that's most of the cyclists.

If I had the choice of buying gear w/o the logo, I would.
Do I take the logo off my chevy truck? No, it would leave holes. Do I scrape cervelo off my bike....actually, I am thinking about getting the bike painted & will not have the logo replaced.
Do I prefer to buy cycle/triathlon gear or t-shirts for that matter that do not have company X stamped all over it....definitely.
I own at least 10 cycle jerseys. The only one that has a logo was a gift.
That said, I am not flaming those that do...go for it. I just don't understand it. That doesn't make it wrong.

I am personally not a huge ESPN fan, but watch occasionally - especially Around the Horn (love that Woody Paige) - and of course the actually sports they show excluding poker (the guy is not really Jesus sp stop calling him that).
Dumbest quote ever heard on ESPN was from former Around the Horn host and former talk show host on Fox Sports Net by Max (unsure of last name) went something like this:
"What's the big deal about Lance Armstrong winning on his bike? So he rides his bike up a hill - I can do that"
There are just no words for that. Maybe that's why I have not seen his face on TV in years.

There is no excuse for a grown man to wear a jersey with someone elses name on it. Well, I guess it is OK if they are dating and want everyone to know...kinda like when girls in high school would wear their BF's jerseys to school on the day of the game ;-)
I really do not care what jerseys people wear when cycling. I have a couple of pro team jerseys which I bought because they were very inexpensive on PBK and loud colors. Visibility is one of the things I look for most in a jersey.

I scored two Gerolsteiner jerseys for like $8 a piece last year. I figure that 99% of the people that I encounter have no idea of it's significance (or lack thereof). Ideally, the other 1% see it as a sarcastic gesture ...

find me one viable citation that there is a "fat burning zone" measured by effort level. the NY Times science/med writer (gina kolata?) tried a few years ago when she wrote a book about getting hooked on spinning and many related tangential issues. she was unable to find anything at all, and traced the origin of this myth back to an aerobics studio in LA in the late 1970's/early 80s.

So you deny that low intensity exercise burns a higher ratio of fat than higher intensity exercise?

i'm not affirming or denying anything. i'm telling you that when a well known, smart journalist who had already published a book or two went to write a book about exercise, *she* could find absolutely no evidence to back up this claim. i don't mean "only a little". i mean
none
. its in her book. did she miss stuff? i don't know.
