IM Malaysia
Can't Post
Does anyone know where a bike profile for this course is?
Anyone else thinking of doing it?
Cheers,
Yanti

As far as i know, there is no bike profile of this course. I can, however tell you what the bike course will look like. Done this race twice. The pic below is taken from the race website.
The course is pretty much a set of rolling hills, with the exception of the path that is marked with a lonely red line just to the left of the words "Kuah Town". This section (in red) is a big ass MOFO of a hill. The remainder of the course is rolling. I think there are 3 sets of major rollers. You will also be exposed to steady sidewinds, but not that big a deal. I rode with 808/disk and am still alive to talk about it. Definitely count on it being a hot & humid day. Most of the course is exposed and is not tree lined. Aid stations are about 10 km apart (6 miles). Road surface is pretty decent. The bike course is 3 loops.

Thanks so much, Paul. There's a training club in Singapore and several in Malaysia where members might have the profile, but they're harder to contact, so I thought I'd try ST first.
Good description of the course. I have some questions:
1. Is the major mofo hill just on that section going out (and therefore not encountered two more times on the loops)?
2. By big ass mofo, any idea what grade/elevation? Like, to me, Mt. Mofo on Oceanside 70.3 (about 700ft elevation, fairly steep) is exactly that, but Chalk Hill on Vineman 70.3 (about 250ft elevation, not very steep, though long) is not at all.
3. By three sets of major rollers, do you mean one set x3 loops, or 3 sets encountered each loop (9 times total)?
Thank you (or anyone else who answers)!

The major hill will only be ridden
once
on your way out of town on your first loop. I am not sure what the mileage will be when u hit the hill. I think i want to say at about 17 kms from T1 (I am not really sure). You are closer to the race venue and you can travel there to preview the course. On the way back into town after the 3 loops, you will use a different route which is flat. You can take it easy on this section to rest your legs for the run.
I dunno what grade it is, but i decided to granny gear it as it was the very start of a long ride.. I decided to save my legs. I don't know what grades it compares out to the races that you mentioned. To compare it to IMMoo, its not as steep as IMMoo.
Each loop has 3 sets of rollers (i think). So, you should encounter these rollers 18 times (3 out, 3 back, multiply be 3 loops).

Pony,
I'm not too sure abt elevations, but i am fairly certain that the swim is dead flat ;-). The swim is in the bay right off the Kuah Jetty. Amazingly, with the amount of ferries and boats there, there was no real taste of diesel in the water. As of '08, the swim is a 1 loop affair. You swim in a clockwise direction heading out to the North-westerly* direction and return swimming south-easterly*. There is a current that flows from east to west during the later part of the swim. During practice swims, you will usually get some sea-lice that kinda bite while you swim. Not a real big deal, so long as your kinda brush yourself off as you run past the showers to rid those fellas before hopping on to your bike. Non-wetsuit swim.
The run is pretty brutal, as you end up starting the run during the hottest part of the day. It doesn't cool off till about 7 something in the evening. Run heading out of town is a very slight uphill, but nothing that will throw you off. Its a 4 loop out-and-back run. Nothing much interesting to look at. It does get congested and you will be running alongside a main road with cars, busses and motorbikes. Not too certain on the aid station locations (I wanna say every 1 km ??)
Oh, forgot to mention, the bottles that they provide on the bike course is 500ml bottles. These are slightly smaller than the usual 20 oz bottles here. They also have ice in the bottles (those with water), and are super cool - good for squirting to cool off on the bike. You will also be riding on the left side of the road.
* ammended the swim direction

Gold...thanks mate. Born in Malaysia and visited many times so familiar with the roads, jellys, 2-stroke engine smoke, etc... ;)
One more Q...what is the nutrition brand of choice at the aidstations...ie, Powerbar, Gatorade, Endura, etc? Couldn't find anything on the site, although I haven't looked for a while.
Cheers

Powerbar Gels and Enervit for liquids. This is going from recollection as I didn't use these items. I was on my supply of Infinit (bike) and E-gel (run). No Gatorade there. Powerbar is strong in that part of the world as Nestle is their distributer/importer.
