Registration is cheap around $300 till sept and hotel is also cheap. From Kuala Lumpur to Lankawi you can take airasia.A budget airline.
I did the 2004 Lankawi and it was tough with about 40% mortality bec of the heat. The course is doable like all others.I can't say that it's flat and they say that to all IM events.haha!

Hi John--I posted a question about IMM as well, you'll probably find the answers useful. I have two friends who have done it. I concur that travel there (not sure where you're traveling from, but there are really good fares even internationally) and lodgings, not to mention registration and availability, are really cheap. A major reason I'm doing it.

This is what I posted in the IM: No Longer Affordable thread:

Registration: $280 (now $320) and super-easy to get in
Airfare: $1000 (no extra for bike check-in) off-season so don't have to purchase months in advance
Hotel: $30/night (nothing fancy, but aircon/pool/proximity)

And it's on a really nice, affordable (awesome cheap food) resort island in the tropics.

Langkawi is definitely affordable. I'd recommend it. It is a tough course, it can be really hot, and he run is a bit of a mental challenge.

I recommend the Sheraton Pedana, if thats in your budget, otherwise there are lots of cheaper alternatives.

Make sure you book your flights early.

Here's a video I found that captures a little of the flavor of the race:

Except the first steep hill, the bike leg is flat with a few rolling hills. Would be fast in normal temperatures.
