IM Canada 2009 did NOT fill up... online reg coming Can't Post

Just thought I'd post the comment made by MC Mike Reilly at last night's Ironman Canada awards banquet: There will be an online registration for IM Canada 2009 (Aug 30/09) with "another 100-200 spots" available. This registration will occur "in the coming days... watch the website for details..." was all that I heard on just when this will occur.

Are you sure you are not referring to the Community Fund slots? These cost way more than general registration.

It was pretty busy down there. My certificate number is in the 1300's and I was a volenteer so we got to go before everyone else. There were a good 700-800 people in the regular line so there's a chance they will let a few hundred more out. That would really piss me off though because I just blew $1000 for my wife and I to fly up and register. We had a ball volenteering as security thugs though.

I was at the end of the "general" line and got my voucher at about 10:30 am. I am #2100, so if they are giving out 2500-3000 slots, there could be open spots coming. When we got to the line about 9:30, it was not really that long. I am not surprised if they have open slots based on what I saw.

I am a bit miffed because I spent a few hundy flying to Spokane, and driving up to IMC on Saturday at o'dark thirty just to get my voucher / watch the race (heckling Dev was sort of the icing on the cake:). Drove back right after and flew home to Boise yesterday. I'm tired!

  Web site says :
Should there be spots available after on-site registration; an announcement will be made in mid-September regarding entry process. We will also announce the number of Ironman Community Fund spots that will be available for Subaru Ironman Canada at that time.

So wonder if they will tell us in september or in coming days it says mid-september.

Me to. Kind of wonder if there was a formal discussion by NAS what they plan on doing if a 'few' spots were still available.

I'd be surprised if they just don't end up adding them to the total Community Fund spots.

I'm not holding my breathe that there will be any online spots come available, but if they do then he/she who is online at the moment it goes live will be happy!!!

Is this the first sign that the popularity of Ironman has peaked?

Has the US economy finally started to affect "the year in advance" registration process?

Not surprised, I am still debating whether I will activate my registration next week... all week long there seemed to be this underlying feeling that IMC has lost some of its "local" flavour that has made this race the most popular of all IM races. Hopefully, this will be another indicator to NAS that they need to listen to the local community and the athletes that have made this race what it is, instead of thinking that they (NAS) are the ones that have made this race. Lastly, if I never hear "You are an Ironman!" again, I will die a happy man! Love live the King!

Calculating absorbtion from the cert # has always seemed to me to be difficult, given that they usually have 5-10 volunteers at the registration table who are each given a stack of vouchers. I figure that if there are 2,000 vouchers to hand out by 10 vounteers. Each volunteer has 200 vouchers: volunteer #1 has a stack that is #'ed 1-200; volunteer #2 has vouchers 210-400; and so on. So if you are the first one to get a voucher from person #10, you'd get voucher #1801. And if you were the last to get a voucher from volunteer #1, you'd get voucher #200.

Was the IMC set-up different?

Re: IM Canada 2009 did NOT fill up... online reg coming [ibjeff] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think this is a sign that hte value of the Canadian dollar combined with tensions over the US economy has made the cost of flying/travelling to Penticton for the sole purpose of standing in a line to get into IMC is not justified for as amny people.

Clearly there were people in line so the value is still there for many people.

I think the demand for IM events is still there. The added benefit of IMC in years past was the strong dollar difference. Now that it costs about the same to rent a place in Penticton as it does in Cour D'Alene or Louisville or Florida or Madison and you cna ususlly get into those races online there is another value question to be asked.

IMC will be full in 2009 and well beyond. But the desire to travel to the race to register might be waining. I personally never saw the value in that. You can be sure that if/when I do 140.6 I'll pick a race that I can sign up for on line.

One lady had a big stack of forms at the entry to the tent, they did not go out into the line and give them to people. Took a bit longer that way because you couldn't pre-fill out your forms.

>>Is this the first sign that the popularity of Ironman has peaked?

More likely the sign that Penticton is a difficult place for people to get to in comparison to someplace like Lake Placid which is within a day's drive for a significantly larger population base.

Keep in mind that this race always "sold-out" because you could register one other person. Even then there were slots available through a lottery after the on-site registration closed.

So they're now getting as many "registrants" under the new policy. That would indicate to me that MORE people are making the investment to travel to Penticton then 3 years ago.

>>Has the US economy finally started to affect "the year in advance" registration process?

Very minimally, if at all.

A quick additional note for those who were not present: volunteers were allowed to register ahead of others. The order was:
- Saturday: those doing this year's race could register (i.e. get the form and number)
- Monday: one line for those with a volunteer's wristband, which was allowed to register first
- Monday: second line for all others

I paid $40/night in Florida and I am paying $81/night in CdA with no night minimums. From what I heard about Canada it is more LP pricing $200/night 5-night minimum.

Maybe 2010 or 2011 I'll do Canada via community fund as it is much, much more economical than a flight, drive, and hotel from Chicago.

Probably not.

I think we are seeing the effects of the change in registration policy.

3 years ago if you were in line you could sign up your self and one other person. This meant that lots of people could get someone else to sign them up and not have to be there in person.

2 years ago they changed the registration process (for the 25th anniversary year) so that you had to be there in person.

They let a larger number of people do the 25th anniversary (last year) than a typical year (2500+ vs a typical 2200/2300 I believe). So this was the first typical year using the new registration process.

I think if they keep the registration process where you must be there in person you will find that it won't be selling out on site anymore. It is just too far and too expensive to go up there to sign up.

FWIW, I don't think all the motels in Penticton require 5 nights, nor are in the $200/night range. Those close to the transition area and finish line (i.e. near Okanagan Lake and the long beach, site of the swim leg) will be high, but 1-4 miles away are plenty of less costly options. We drove in on Thursday and saw "vacancy" signs everywhere until the last 0.5 mile, so I doubt a 5-night minimum was in effect at all those establishments with vacancy signs. But, it is still a challenge to have to be on site to register... which is why the possibility of some online spots coming up is good news (except for those who made the sacrifice to be there, as posted above by a few).

Most (all?) of the hotels and motels in Penticton will only take reservations through a central reservations number for Ironman week. They have a 5 night minimum and do tend to be in the $200/night range.

If you go farther out you can get cheaper but I don't think you can get away from the 5 night min until you get quite a bit farther out. If you show up without a reservation you might be able to get a spot you like or maybe not. A vacancy sign means generally means they have a spot that night, if you are staying more than one night you might be out of luck or have to move.

2 years ago I showed up at the last minute to spectate and register. The closest vacancy sign I found was near Osoyoos and the campgrounds were full or closed early for the night. I ended up sleeping in the car the first night . Granted that was registering for the busier 25th anniversary so it was probably busier than usual.

It's official, registration is available on Friday on the website. Wonder how many folks will get in? Good luck everyone! I did this race and it's great (not as great as Lake Placid) so anyone considering it, should be at their computer on Friday!

I did the same this year and found a good B&B 5 blocks from the start line at very short notice (that day basically). We also did a cruise around after the bike course closed and saw many vacancy signs on Main St. further towards the Skaha Lake side of Penticton.
