To me it looked like a bunch of fast people were catching a group of slow people and trying to get around them. Passing sometimes causes a bottle neck. I saw distance between people and I am not sure it wasn't legitimate. I have came upon a group of slower people riding legal and started to pass when a bike pulled out in front of me , I slowed down which caused people behind to gain distance quickly. At this time I was passing so many that I could not drop back and had to wait for the bike that pulled out in front of me to get out of the way. I did not know what to do and it made me very nervous. I would have to see some of the before and after to know what was really going on. Can you say that you have never been in a position that if a picture was taken it would have looked as though you were drafting.

If you really cared about enforcing the rules, why are you not an official and riding on the back of a motorcycle? You can then give out drafting calls all day long, and be really happy that you made lots of folks days in their hobbies.
A video shot could never be used to made a call. Unless it is 15 or 20 seconds in the draft zone, a few seconds of video tell you nothing.
So, are you an official?

I have no doubt that you're right about a percentage of the people out there but I believe some of the people do care. I believe the public ridicule is something they will want to avoid as much as they seek the adulation for a race well done.

I have developed a new bike jersey that can only be read from within 4 bike lengths.
If you can read this, you are too close.
And if they don't drop back? My go go gadget thumbtacks empty out on the course. that should solve the problem.
Yeah, until you come around on the second or third lap and hit your own thumbtacks.... :D

I'll see if Jimmy needs marshals next year and I'll volunteer. As a matter of
fact I did volunteer in April to do it, but they needed something else worse.
So, "put up or shut up" doesn't work.
Video would work. It would require hi-def and a vantage point that allows
you to get full 25 second shots (i.e. bird's eye).
Overall the racing looked pretty clean to me, but I didn't have a good vantage.

Yeah, I'm pretty new to the sport I really shouldn't be bringing this up.
There is one point I should make here - the reason I was able to shoot the video (get the camera rolling in advance of the group arriving) was because we saw them coming the other way 3-4 minutes earlier and anticipated they might still be together when they turned around and came back to us.
Drafting is like pornography. I know it when I see it.
I'm going to continue to bitch about it.

Great. I have yet to hear Jimmy state he has more folks who want to help be a marshall than he can use, but I guess this would be a great goal to have. Sitting on the road watching is totally different than being on a motorcycle, trying to make a call, and making sure you do it correctly. No one likes to get a bogus call from an official.
I still wish they would break races into two groupings. The first are the folks racing for awards, AG placing, etc. These folks you throw the rules at. But, for the 90% who are just out there to enjoy a hobby, why waste the limited resources on them?

Well, it doesn't matter if Dave is an official. He's not bitching about the state of affairs.
He's bitching about us bitching.
I do like the idea of a 3 wave start race.
Pro, AGers going for it and the hobbyists. It's an idea worth exploring.

Yep, 3 kids of folks in life.
1). Those who bitch.
2). Those who bitch and give ideas on improvements.
3). Those who bitch, give ideas for improvements, and then offer to help implement?
I sure wish more in our sport would become Type 3's, rather than so many I see that are Type 1's.
I have heard a few races that once you won your AG at them, you then had to race in the elite grouping. (Or what ever it was called).

As many racers in an IM are 1st timers, I don't think the ST posts are going to make much difference into shaming people. I think we need to make it common for riders to patrol their own space. I saw a lot of what was likely drafting (but only seeing 2-3 seconds of packs going the other way, it's hard to be sure). On the first loop, there was a guy who kept getting onto my wheel (~1-2 bike lengths back). I gave a look then would drop him but eventually see him pass me stuck on someone else's wheel. The last time, I slowed and told him that if I saw him on my wheel again, I would take him down (I would never do that, but he didn't know that). He said the problem was that I would keep varying my speed appartenly oblivious to the rules.
In any case, my point is that we should always confront those who we see on our wheels. Many of the rules I think are BS but drafting is an unfair advantage and a safety issue. I passed several people on the right but it was always when I was on the shoulder and they were riding in the middle of the lane. Even on a 3-loop course, drafting was definitely not needed. Of course, a wave start would help spread things out but that's another topic.

Yay!! I'm clearly a type three!
I'm bitching.
I'm offering a solution - public humiliation.
And helping to implement - posting my video!

Nope, but in this case, where you are saying folks break the rules, unless you have been trained and are on the back of a motorcycle, you have no idea how hard it is!!!

The truth of the matter is, I would be happy to work as an official but I'm sure Mr. Fleck could confirm that as a coach of several professional athletes, the only races I'd be able to officiate at would be ones where none of my athletes are racing. It's been a few years since I've gone to a race where I didn't have a past or present athlete racing.
I'll have to stick to my Bitching, Shooting, Posting plan.

I've done a race or two so I have SOME idea of how hard it is.
I've been riding at IMC when more than one pack went rolling by.

Maybe you could get some other friends to help. How about one of your racers when they are not racing? Seeing a Pro give back as an official would sure lead by example.

I'm sure many would consider it.
Might be some conflict within the ranks if other athletes feel affiliations exist.
Pete and I volunteered out at an aid station in Kona a few years back. The athletes loved it.
You won't get me to disagree that athletes should be giving back!
I have to go the awards banquet now.
