I am new to this but how do they handle this if the river is unfit to swim?
Pond scum invades Ohio River

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Health officials in Cincinnati say people should avoid swimming in parts of the Ohio River where an outbreak of pond scum is making the water appear greener than usual.
People rarely swim in the river along southwest Ohio's border, but boating and water skiing is a popular activity there.
Officials say contact with the algae can cause skin and eye irritation and intestinal illness that also can affect pets that swim in the river.
Experts say pond scum is most likely to develop in warm weather in slow-moving water, and that description fits the Ohio River in August.
Some cities get their drinking water from the river, but officials say the algae is removed during the purification process and does not pose a threat

I was in the river on Saturday just north of Louisville and I was not attacked by algae. I believe that the swim is just canceled if there is a problem, but not sure.

Have a friend who got a nasty UTI after a Louisville HIM this summer after swimming in the Ohio River (and this is a guy). I think if I was swimming 2 miles in the Ohio this weekend I would get a prescription for some antibiotics.
