How many triathletes are in Halton Hills, ON Can't Post

Hey Guys,

Just a quick inquiry regarding how many people are training for triathlons in the Halton Hills region.(Georgetown/Acton/Erin)

I've recently started as a Fitness Consultant at a gym in Georgetown, but I'm a long time tri-guy and wouldn't mind setting up a group for triathletes/duathletes to utilize.

If anyone's interested in getting involved in this, just send me a ST message and I'll respond ASAP.

Cheers,

Jeff(Big Papa Smurf)

I'm in Oakville. But I do 100% of my riding in the areas you describe (as do most rifers in GTA west.

There are tons of Tri clubs and groups that ride in the area, swim at Kelso etc...

It is sort of a Mecca for training in Ontario (don't tell anyone).

I used to live in that area 10 years ago, if you think Kelso and area is a mecca for trainning then you really need to get out more.

A few years ago I tried to swim at kelso in the summer and beside the muddy water they made me swim in water that was 2-3feet deep away from the boats.

Now I would agree with you if you said that 20 years ago it was a great place but the population growth along with speeding commuters has made it much riskier.

I now live on Vancouver Island, now this is a mecca for trainning.

I said mecca for training in Ontario.

Ontario isn't that great a place to train because the good roads are busy and the other roads are crumbling.

Kelso is still a good place to swim.

My favourite place to train is at my cottage. Right on Lake Huron. I can do as much OW swimming in crystal clear water with a sandy bottom that is 5 feet deep as I want. The roads are great and the view is spectacular at sunset.

The problem is I need to make a living to afford to do this sport and cant do that at teh cottage.

BTW. I have family on Vancouver Island. I don't get the fascination people have with that place having to live there would kill the training benefits for me. I think the best place to live and train would be Quebec City.

I hear what your saying, I often ask myself why I left Southern Ontario for paradise

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. I've been living on the Island for a couple of years, and love being able to run on bare pavement and ride road year-round. Are you saying that there aren't many benefits to the Island aside from year-round training?

The 'lifestyle' people on Van Island absolutely drive me crazy!!! I stress that this is just me, I might be the crazy one.

I find the place (Victoria, Naniamo, Gold River, Comox Valley where I have various family) to be a terrible combination of pretentious and ineffective. Pretentious in the "we get no snow-we have tea-we count blossoms way and ineffective in the way that McDonalds takes about 20 minutes to get a burger and fries. Every time I visit I leave upset that such a culture can exist where nobody wants to get anything done during the day, they just want to pass the 8 hours in as relaxed a fashion as possible before they go home and enjoy tea in their garden. It is a good thing it doesn't snow there, I don't think the people that live there would have the energy to shovel it.

Look this is just me, don't stress over it. I live in Oakville and love it. I'm sure you love Van Island. Each to his own right?

People all tell me that I'm the odd one for not wanting to live the Vancouver Island life.

As for Quebec city being the best to train. There are great hills and roads for riding right in the city let along outside of it.

"best place to live and train would be Quebec City. "

As much as I love Quebec City, don't consider living there unless you speak perfect Quebecois. A Montreal it ain't. And what about winter training? Good skiing though. My daughter lives on Vancouver Island. I could move there in a millesecond, except for the higher house prices there than we have in eastern Ontario.

"OK, I'll admit I screwed up the facts"

Ha Ha, you are right on a few fronts, people don't like to work to hard, except for perhaps at sports and leisure, I know that's the exact reason I moved here.

Not sure where the tea drinking comes from, perhaps you need to hang around with someone other then your grandmother when you come here.

Oddly enough my mother is visiting here from Oakville at the moment and she can't get over how no one honks at her when she slows down to look for a street, I guess no ones in a hurry to get to McDonalds.

You are right on that people lord over their eastern relatives about lack of snow, but how can you resist when your cutting your lawn in early Feb and out for a 5 hours ride in Jan, when your friends in the rest of Canada are stuck in -20. Also my heating bill for my house for the year is about $500.

Don't even get me started about the humidiity and smog in Ontario in July, my lung problems have disappeared since I moved out here 10 years ago.

As for house prices they are very high because everyone wants to live here.

Ottawa is a pretty good place to train!

I just moved to the island and I think that you must be the crazy one. Oddly enough, I've gone back to making "pseudo-Americanos" with my moka espresso maker because of Starbucks. The two Starbucks in town are annoyingly slow, however it doesn't take me any longer to get my coffee because so many places in Calgary were understaffed. Other than that, I have yet to have a run-in with anyone else on "island time" and people generally are more mellow in BC than elsewhere in Canada. I've lived in ON, Edmonton, Calgary and the Lwr Mainland so I have a decent idea of what's out there.

I'm not sure what you mean about the pretentious people - the ones I have issues with are those who steal cars, drive them up the forestry roads and light them on fire. Those people seem to be way more common in Nanaimo than the ones having tea.

I for one am a big fan of "Island Time." The fact that nobody seems to be in a hurry around here - even right in Victoria - makes for some very bike-friendly traffic. I feel badly at times, actually, at how reluctant some drivers seem to be to go around me, even when I'm as far right as I can be.

As for training, there really isn't a better place in Canada to train if you want to be serious about tri. Being able to be out on the road year-round is a real treat. That said, I miss the snow and the four distinct seasons. I don't think I'll stick around here for too long after I finish school, but I've been really happy to be living out here as I've taken up the sport of triathlon.

OK - So how did my thread get hijacked from a simple inquiry of how many people would be interested in a group focussing on Georgetown, ON triathletes, to a Vancouver Island vs. the rest of Canada debate? :|

Sorry for the re-focus here, but are there any triathletes who would want to associate with others in the area? I work at Atlantis Athletics and am hoping to start up something for some Halton tri-geeks. The Georgetown Runners run out of here every Sunday morning, so there's no reason why we can't start up something like this for us tri people.

Again, just send me an ST message if you'd want to hear of anything that I'm putting together.

Cheers,

Jeff
