How fast can you change a clincher? Can't Post

Replacing a clincher tube the other day took me quite awhile since I hardly ever do it. I shudder to think about what I'd do with tubulars... Anyway, I recalled a guy I knew whose claim to fame was a 45s replacement time on a removed wheel, from hands on to hands off (using a new tube and CO2, of course).
So how fast can YOU change a tube? For a starting point to boost all your egos, it took me about 6 minutes.

In the old days, I could do it in about 3 (including taking care to be sure the inside of the tire was free of whatever flatted it in the first place). Nowdays, tires are so darned tight on the rims and I'm getting so old and feeble I'm lucky to be able to do it at all.

psycholist has it, pretty slow because most tires/rims now days are so tight I have to get out tire levers. The rims that came on my wifes low-end specialized road bike were such that I could very easily pull the tire off and put back on with bare hands. So easy that I could probably get a change on those rims under 2 minutes. Maybe under 1 if I really tried. Her new open pros however require the tire levers and lots of cussing and swearing so they probably take 5.

Around 3 minutes. I can change my Hed Jet w/michelin pro race 2 in well under 5 without tire levers. Unfortunately I got to practice all too often this summer.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [slowhokie] [In reply to] Can't Post

last time i flatted, it took me almost 20 minutes.
15 of that was trying to find a pump after i managed to unload around half of my C02 before the charger was attached to the nozzle.
the rest of the task probably took 3-4 minutes.

i consider myself lucky that the whole process didn't include the hour or so it would have taken me to get my ass picked up and driven home. goin' w/the mini pump in my pocket now.

I can do about 50 seconds, but that's largely due to two things: i was the "bike guy" in my college tri club, and then I continued that practice by getting a job at a shop. So, when you've change probably over 1000 tires, it happens... Practice makes perfect!

But two things I've learned: use one lever and once you hook it under the bead, whip it around the rim as fast as you can, and when you're putting the tire back on the rim, utilize the backwards palm roll to set the bead.

I haven't done it in a race for a few years, but it was always less that 1:30 (unless it was wet and muddy, which slowed everything down). For tubbies, I can do it just about that if not quicker, as I just cut off the old tubby, then mount a well stretched spare. Couldn't be easier, if you asked me.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [slowhokie] [In reply to] Can't Post

Coming from a 20-year background of MTB racing, it takes me about 1.5 minutes with CO2 by the side of the road (from releasing the brakes to getting back on the seat) and I have seen videos of the fastest pros doing it in that amount of time (this is rear wheel, by the way. Front wheels are faster). I never worked in a shop, but I did realize that tire/tube changes are something a mountain bike racer practices (like triathletes practice transitions). If you don't already have one, it is far faster to use a Quik Stik (which are cheap and available at many shops) in lieu of tire levers. I have one on each of my bikes.

97 seconds and that's the rear wheel and we're talking start to finish: removing wheel, changing tire, putting wheel back in the bike - the whole thing. And....I got proof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeeOhkug0yg

This is one of the added features to the DVD series we made. David my co-producer put some survivor-esque music behind it as a joke, but it heights the tension as you watch.

As in previous posts - it's just about practice and that suggestion to use just one level and peel it round the bead it good too (if your tire is not crazy tight).

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [slowhokie] [In reply to] Can't Post

I am not that fast, not because I do not know how to do it or because I does not happen that frequently (2 flats this year I believe but alose I switch between race tires/tubes and training tires/tubes) but because I want to make sure a) there is nothing inside the rim or tire that could cause another flat and b) that I do not pinch the tube to cause another flat.

Front wheel

He already had the tire lever in his hand when he got off the bike

The tube he produced out of his pack already had a little air in it for easier insertion

No way that's representative of what he could do with a rear wheel in a real race situation.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [islandman] [In reply to] Can't Post

51 seconds...sure but a few problems

-He didn't check inside the tire
-He didn't use any tire levers (I find at least one is needed for getting most "road" tires off)
-He already had a CO2 cartridge charged...not practical
-His repair kit was in his jersey (not practical for tri's IMO)
-And he left his tube/inflator behind.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [ianpeace] [In reply to] Can't Post

I loved the video :) IMO changing tires on the road is all about confidence. The 1st time I did it, I was surprised how easily I did it. The second time I did it, I did it very quickly ~2-3 mins (for me that's fast). It really isn't hard. I follow pretty much the exact same process you show in the video with one exception....horizontal dropout for the P3 are a pain in the ass.

Probably 3 minutes...

A lot less time than it takes to read the instructions:

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [slowhokie] [In reply to] Can't Post

I flatted on my way to the start line of a 40K TT this year. Since roadies don't carry anything to change a flat, I rolled the rim back to my car, then changed the rear flat (808/Pro2Lgt). The 'tap showed an elapsed time of 52 seconds, and this included using a floor pump and removing and installing the wheel. I got to the start with about 15 seconds to go.

The tire was pretty old and didn't fit tightly at all--which made a big difference, obviously.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [slowhokie] [In reply to] Can't Post

It depends on the tire. I can do a pro race 3 with out levers in about 2 minutes.

My old continental gp 4000 required at least two levers and 5 minutes of finger blistering fun.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [slowhokie] [In reply to] Can't Post

Sure I bet I could do it in a minute or less, if I had the wheel off the bike with all my tools at hand.

However, in real life I have have to remove wheel, unpack my overstuffed tiny little saddlebag, look for what cauased the flat, ensure the tube isn't pinched, repack everything or at least shove it in a jersey pocket...now that's a realistic tire change and I'm guessing that takes at least 3 minutes if I try to do it quickly, probably more like 4-5 most of the time.

I'm never flatted in a race but I bet the adreneline factor could shave off some time.

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [BK] [In reply to] Can't Post

i'm probably about 5:00

i could probably go faster if my tires were nice and soft and pre-chosen for video shooting; if i didn't double check the tire THOROUGHLY; and if I didn't pack up all my stuff back where it belongs.

I def don't want to be doing it again 10mins later!

I've had a epidemic of flats lately so I have some recent experience. Takes me about 5 minutes if I work carefully, inspect the tire, etc.

2:11 last time I timed it. I think I've gone faster and I know I've gone slower.

I can tag a fire hydrant and have water flowing in 1:17. I added this just in case we want to talk about anything else that, you know...you've timed

Re: How fast can you change a clincher? [jpflores] [In reply to] Can't Post

It takes me a few seconds longer than usual because to get the rear wheel off I have to entirely unscrew the skewer. As long as it's not a major blowout the fastest way is to find the puncture, get the glass or whatever shard out of the outside of the tire, then grab a lever and only pull out enough tube to reach it. Peel and stick a patch on it, get the glass or whatever from the puncture site, put it back in. Takes under a minute if you don't have to remove the tube... If you have the CO2 cartridge mostly screwed into the inflator it only takes a couple of seconds to do that.
