Hed powertap disk at Interbike Can't Post

I was curious when that would happen. I wonder, given the historical finickiness of power equipment, if the wheel must be sent back to Hed or Powertap for servicing?

Depends

The hub likely goes to Saris, rim goes to HED

What sort of shape is that disc? It looks like it's convexed and I thought they only did flat or lenticular (concaved).

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [JulianInEngland] [In reply to] Can't Post

This is convexed. Concave 'caves inwards' (is the easiest way to remember it). This one bulges outwards and is lenticular.

This is more extreme in it's curvature than many I've seen though.

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [UK Gearmuncher] [In reply to] Can't Post

I had the convexed and concave the right way around, however I thought that lenticular was concaved! It's hard to see how curved it is but it could just be the decal making it look so curvacious. Do you think an H3 with a PT could be on it's way?

likely although it depends on how many tools they have to modify. Its probably easier when creating new wheels rather than modding old ones.

I would have thought it would be easy given that the hub is merely slide into the wheel, I guess it depends on the hub diameter.

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [JulianInEngland] [In reply to] Can't Post

yes but the hub is probably standard as well involving probable changes to the tri spoke tooling primarily. I'm not sure if they have the market to warrant altering their main tools. That said I don't work for Hed, but I wouldn't have thought they would have lots of tooling to mess with and new tooling of this size isn't cheap.

These are all educated assumptions though.

this has me a little confused, how does the PT disc differ from the Jet disc ( which is what this appears to be albeit in C2 form)

no difference from jet disc... it's a jet disc with a PT hub, versus their standard hub. the jet disc- is a spoked wheel with a bonded cover over it.

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [mlinenb] [In reply to] Can't Post

thats what I thought.

the posts above seemed to infer something different. Id presume the hub is non removable as in the original jet disc, and therefore the whole wheel would have to go to saris?

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [slidecontrol] [In reply to] Can't Post

Saris does not do any part of the wheel build. You either supply a 24 hole Powertap hub (or 28 hole) to HED or they build the Jet disc with one of their Powertap hubs (instead of a HED hub). The hub is not removeable- once the wheel is built. Just like any other spoked wheel- hub is not removeable- unless you rebuild whole wheel.

understood, thats how it has always been when getting a PT wheel AFAIK.

my confusion stemmed from this statement

however, the HED have already said in previous posts/releases that if a spoke was to break ( however unlikely ) the wheel would be toast. I can only assume that if the PT goes bung, the wheel is also unrepairable?

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [slidecontrol] [In reply to] Can't Post

HED has great customer service-and the wheel is probably repairable. They use their super strong home made Ti spokes for this wheel. If the PT has problems- they are completely servicable without taking apart the wheel. They could put in all new strain gauges and electronics- just by accessing the exposed hub.

Does anyone have any information on a release date for this wheel?

Or shall we say...in your dreams?

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [mlinenb] [In reply to] Can't Post

The HED disc is a Jet 90 with a carbon fiber cover glued in place over the spokes. When I spoke to HED at Interbike they said if you break a spoke that you send the disc back, they can remove the cover and replace the spoke. The wheel can be trued with the cover in place.

MSRP on the Jet Disc is 1050, Stinger is 1350. For powertap add 1295 for wireless PT. If you already have a 24 or 28 hole powertap hub you can send it to them to be built into a disc.

Do you know if the Hed PT disc can be purchased without the computer, assuming you have a Garmin Edge 705 and the Wireless PT is the forthcoming ANT+ version?

It can but it might be a month or two before HED has a steady supply of 2009 powertap (per HED customer service).

Apparently this exact disc (the one shown at Interbike) is on its way to my house once it makes a pit stop at Bikesports for a tire fitting.

I am planning on getting one when they come out. i talked to the guys at HED and they said call them back in December as they were still working on the final specs.

Are you saying that you actually purchased the Interbike demo? If so - what did you pay?

Re: Hed powertap disk at Interbike [tridawg72] [In reply to] Can't Post

It wasn't "used" so I don't think it was sold as a demo but Tom at Bikesports gave me a good deal (though I have no idea what others paid). PM me and I'll try to find the price. I just hope all these ST'ers didn't put their grubby hands all over the disc. ;-)
