Hawaii Age Group RULES Can't Post

How come Official Ironman events' Age group rules differ between races?

I.E. For China you race in the age group of your actual age on race day

For South Africa you race in the age group based on age at end of the calendar year (31/12/XXXX) the race take place

This means at China I would race in a different age group to S Africa
Confused??

For a number of years, ITU rules have specified that everyone races age as of end of year. That way, you'll race in the same age group throughout the year (eliminates end of calendar year championships where you qualify in one age group, then age up and race the championships in the higher age group).

USAT was age as of race day until 3-4 years ago, when they switched to age as of end of year.

Ironman was age as of race day through the end of 2008. Starting with 2009, they also changed to be age as of end of year. As far as I know, this is standard across all of the Ironman races.

If you're looking at some kind of web site or athlete's guide for China, as of 2009 or 2010, it might just be some of the old language creeping forward from an older year. Best thing to do is to send an email to Ironman, along with the reference you found, to confirm what I'm saying is right.
