Global Flyer is feet dry. Can't Post

Global flyer just crossed in to Morocco Airspace. I know a lot of you think this is a rich guy playing with his toys, but it is still interesting. Tracking updated every five minutes can be found here:

http://www.virginatlanticglobalflyer.com/...l/Tracking/index.jsp

Is it just me or is it snowing like a bitch out there. (michigan)

Can you clarify something for me ?? I just read the 'route' and it talked about going through England, France..... but the plane is currently flying over Morocco ?!?! It's not going to pull at hard left and fly straight north is it ?? I thought they had to cross 80 specified waypoints to make it official.... what happened ??

The website is definetly not updated. Somebody closed some airspace and they had to change the route. Also he is trying to stay in the jet stream for some extra boost. Original route had him going south of the Great Lakes, but he actually crossed michigan north of detroit.

They filed an updated list of the 80 waypoints with the proper authorities just befor take off.

Just turned south while in Algeria? looked like a pretty sharp turn, Tom any ideas? I haven't been able to get a readable route map off their site.

Obviously I don't know the Libyan TCA protocols, although I read he had been cleared into Libyan air space. The temperature over the desert could be a factor. It is mid-day there, with enormous columns of super-heated air rising off the Sahara even affecting the weather at 470. Perhaps this turn is weather oriented.

Warm air would also be less dense than cold air, therefore offering less resistance/drag. His course is drifting back east a little at this point. I was just surprized to see such a relatively sharp turn, does look like he is heading for the Libyan border.

Looks like he might cross Tunisia, which I know nothing about, actually had to look up the country on a world map.

At any altitude that aircraft handles very slowly I read.

This whole thing is incredible. I'm transfixed by it. Fascinating. I follow it minute by minute. Riveting.

I have 2 windows open on the computer, ST and Global Flyer, been following all day. I actually checked to see where he was about 3 in the morning.

This is what he is flying over right now, exactly. However the image is six years old.

Interesting looking area of wadis and washes. Looks atypically populous for that region.

I read he wasn't supposed to be above four five zero until Saudi. I wonder if this is a positive development in the flight plan.

Tonight will be long night for Steve Fossett as he crosses some of the most hostile air space in the world and begins to prepare for a sun-up transit of the Pacific ocean, flying opposite the rotation of day light around the earth.

As we get into mid day (relative) for him tomorrow it will be very difficult to remain awake and fly the aircraft.

I agree, I saw the effects of sleep deprivation while working aggresor for sear school at FT Bragg. We would chase the school participants throught the woods for three days and then "capture" them, lots of noise and flash-bangs. Then act as guards for the prison camp portion. Some of the "music" played at night was haunting. After 4 days with little sleep these guys were zombies, totally on auto pilot. I don't think they could make a rational decision. Which is scary if you are flying a plane. I would wager he has something a bit stronger than redbull stashed in the cockpit for an emergency.

Re: Global Flyer is feet dry. [Tom Demerly] [In reply to] Can't Post

News reports state he is going to take 30 minute "power naps."

He's got an auto pilot so it sounds like his principle tasks are moving fuel around and making course changes to keep up with the weather. It won't be easy by any stretch but neither of these tasks is going to take constant attention so he should be able to squeeze in a nap every few hours and get enough sleep to at least stay sane.

I for one would be terrified of dozing off at 46,000 feet then dying from a slow depresserization so I'd stay awake for 52 hours then crash but I guess that is why I am not doing this.

I wonder if he brought along a DVD player?

Yup. Last report over Libya at 47K after having corrected a GPS problem over the US.

The report said he picked up a 100 mph jetsream and his speed is over 300 mph now.

47,466. That is crazy altitude. It's hard to imagine being that high up. Curve of the earth would be readily apparent, wonder how much darker the sky is, I think (and I don't know why) that black sky is 60,000 feet.

I was way off, it's 600 kilometers to dark sky.

Entering Saudi Arabia, god I'm bored, work was called off because of snow and I have sat at the computer most of the day. I have a cold and my shoulder is still messed up. I think I might go to the gym anyway.

49,000 feet. That's incredible. I think it is like, -60 below zero fahrenheit at that altitude. Incredible.
