Georgia Cup TT Series- 11 TTs- Atlanta area
Can't Post
Georgia Cup is putting on a TT series next year... ! There supposedly are shorter and longer option at each race- short being 10-15 miles, longer being around 25 miles. Georgia Cup is a promoter in the Atlanta area- that has put on lots of cycling races recently- and are the main game in town- but have had their share of growing pains along the way. However- they have had a history of cancelling entire race weekends at the last moment- b/c of lack of racers or some other issues, combining categories, changing race formats on the day of the race, etc. Also- they have road cycling races through most of the season- and many racers choose the close races to Atlanta, and bail on others b/c they don't want to race every other weekend or travel several hours. Anyway- I think it's much better to have races, than not to have, and hopefully they will listen to prior feedback for improvements. I know that there's a very well attended TT series in NC at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
So... I wonder how many cyclists and Triathletes will do these races? I think the early season races are good fitness testers. I'm sure I will do some, but have to check the weekends for other tris, etc. Supposedly most of the races - except 1 & 2 are to be within an hour of Atlanta...
As to locations- not much listed yet.

I'll probably end up doing some of 'em, but I did the GC series TT at the "Tour of Atlanta" last year and I thought the course was ridicuolus ... through a tight little residential neighborhood with a beer distributorship at the end of the street. A bunch of driveway cuts and little rolling hills where, if someone were pulling out, you wouldn't stand a chance ... and big beer trucks running up and down the narrow road with no concern whatsoever about the cyclists. I thougt it was pretty awful.
I'll be sure to check out each course as best I can before I make the trip to any of these races. Having been a hood ornament once in my life, I'm not anxious for it to happen again and I think some race directors show more concern for the safety of their racers than others.

I did the Tour of Atl TT as well- and I agree with you- that course was very technical, hard to see where to go next, and I have pictures of me- actually getting out of the aero tuck, going for brakes *prior* to finishing- b/c you literally had to stop VERY quickly after crossing the finish line- people were in the street, etc. There was a cyclist- that sadly- was hit badly by a car warming up... I don't think this had anything to do with the race promoter, but just bad luck in general. I just hope the courses don't test my crit skills- b/c some of their courses do that- and I'd rather they test TT skills...

seriously? the TT have two turns, 45 degrees each, it could not have been less technical. And sad as it is, the rider who was hit was warming up on a major highway a few miles from the course, nothing to do with the race itself.

I'm surprised the Tundra isn't a part of this. That's my favorite TT in Ga.

Good point. That's been on my calendar the last two years. Also, I did a very cold TT down in Calloway Gardens last year as part of the "Wheels of Fire" century weekend. It was very cold, but it was a really neat course on the little roads through Calloway Gardens. Lots of fun. Not a big turnout at all, but it was the first year.
They started a TT series in Greenville at the Donaldson Center this last year. I wonder if that's what the Greenville dates on the Georgia Cup schedule will be?
There's an awesome TT venue just across the river from me (I'm in South Carolina) near Elberton, GA. There's a 7 mile road leading into and out of Bobby Brown State Park off of Hwy. 72. It has a few bumps, but it's mostly flat. The pavement is mostly good. It's 7 miles each way, so you could do a 20k or better. Elberton and the state park are nearby for lodging, but aside from that it's mostly rural and very lightly traveled. I'd love to see a TT on that stretch.

Not technical in the sense of actual turns- by my memory of the course was:
-you could not see that far down the course- as it was twisting type road, open to traffic- which added a little to the equation during a 4pm-6pm time trial (which slowed some riders down at times- including me)
- there was a fork to the left- half way out- I almost went right- b/c of a over zealous volunteer waving a flag in no particular direction and I did know several riders that did go off course and have to retrace.
-Lastly- the finish area had lots of people crossing the street about 50 feet passed the finish line.

puts on that TT
The GA cup TT series- I assume is 100% put on by GA cup- just like their regular racing series.
for the posting of the GA TT series- I received this from their yahoo group:

I was interested in embarrassing myself at next year's Tundra TT. To give me something to break the winter training up. So, I've been checking out the Surgesports.com website. Never found anything other than old results, nothing about 2009. And today, the website seems to be 'down'.
1) Have you heard anything about this? Bad economy fatality? Or is registration usually this late, this close to the race day?
2) Whether its the Tundra or Georgia Cup TT stuff, do I need any special license to enter? I've done tri's, but no UCI stuff. I'm 37, do I just sign up for the 35+ Masters, no credentials needed? Open enrollment?
Thanks,
Chris

You need a USAC license or can purchase one at the race.
Last year I don't think registration opened until January. I registered on Jan 14th and I always try and register as soon as I can for this, so I think reg just won't open until later.

I should know by the end of the year if I'll still be in the Atlanta market. If I'm here and think I can drag my carcass out of bed for it, I'll be there.
Though, that does mean I need to bring my bike out of hiding again soon.
