East Potomac Park also called Hains Point. It's a nice 3 mile loop (or 5 mile if you add a little part heading north up the DC side of the Potomac going towards the Alrington Memorial Bridge. It's the easiest and safest place to get a weekday ride in and is good for tri training as there are only 3 stops signs on the loop (which you can basically ignore) so there is little need to get out of the aerobars. No climbing and a bit boring, but you'll see lots of other folks down there.

You can cross the bridge over to Rosslyn to hop onto the Custis trail which connects to the W&OD, a solid ride. Or you can get on the Mt. Vernon trail out to Alexandria. This site has a lot of info on the area trails.
While they're definitely good, I find the trails a little too crowded for training, especially on the weekends. Beach Drive is a 2 lane road that starts in Rock Creek Park and it's closed to traffic on the weekends and goes way out into Nowheresville, MD. I've heard Macarthur Blvd is another good ride, but I've never been down it. Good luck!

Here's a google map link that should work.

I'm not up there anymore but...

The canal starts in Georgetown and goes north 180+ miles.

Macarthur Blvd is a good option. If you're looking to go longer, take it out to Falls Road, turn right on Falls and go left in a mile or so on River Road. Spend a minute or two on google maps checking this out, and you'll see it's pretty easy to do.

I think the C&O Canal is unpaved dirt. Probably flat-ish the first few well-trafficked miles but still not the place for a road bike (assuming that's what he's asking).

Oops. Clearly I've been gone too long. I'm clearly mixing up trails. Maybe he can bring his cross bike :)

MacArthur
Falls Rd
Left on River
Go Left at T-intersection to stay on River.

Ride till you get tired, then turnaround.

Great route. MacArthur is actually pretty safe, especially early AM or on weekends, as the speed limit is only 30 or 35 mph.

Or if you actually want to get out of DC and take in the VA countryside and fall foliage, check out the Potomac Peddlers site for cue sheets.

Be sure to check out the difficulty ratings on some, these folks evidently love climbing. I've enjoyed several of their rides recently, mostly the ones around Warrenton, VA (45 min from DC on the weekend). Coffee in Clifton is also a fun one, who would've thought there are rural hills in Fairfax County? One minute it looks like PA/Jersey along the Delaware, the next its countryside with neighborhoods, pretty nice.

That route I listed gets you about 40 miles outside of DC...

Hey thanks for that route...have enjoyed it a few times this week and for a longer one last weekend. Had no idea there was stuff like that so close. Any suggestions out into the country... I am willing to drive 45-an hour if there is a "must do" ride. thanks again.
