Gas Pains -- What are you using??? Can't Post

I'd say for the most part many of us have them even though fuel prices have been dropping. I picked up a Specialized Tricross single speed and set up a route to get to work which has taken back to being a kid again. My pains are all but gone and it add 30 minutes a day each way of hopeful weight loss and mixed terrain fun each way to work. What are you guys using?

I just rescued my 1987 Bridgestone MB-5 mountain bike from my parents barn a few weeks ago. I'm in the process of building it up as a commuter bike.

I have a 2001 Mustang Cobra that gets 17MPG on premium fuel. No way in hell am I ever going to get rid of my gas guzzler unless some one points a gun to my head, but I'll admit that I put more miles on my Cervelo than the Mustang.

See the thing is, 150hp at 2000lbs (I've removed a couple hundred) is about as quick as say, the new Mustang GT with 300hp at 3500lbs

I've tested this, haha

Not to mention I can win autocrosses on 195x15inch tires that are cheap, instead of needing 335s!

It may have been a year ago now- I gave up on car ownership altogether. Sold my Subaru to find friend Mario. He wrecked it in an accident. I haven't owned a car since and don't necessarily need one considering the expense.

As race season approaches I'll need one though. I'm thinking of finding a used Honda Element with about 30-40,000 miles on it. Should be around $15K and get good gas mileage. I've only owned one new car in my life, my Subaru, and while that was a nice car it was a waste of money. I could have done as good much cheaper. When it comes to transportation I like to look at and think about fancy cars but am a horrible cheapskate and could never come to grips with actually paying for one. Buying that Subaru new felt like an amputation.

I would be very surprised if your Toyota could out run my Mustang Cobra. Yes, my car needs big tires and I run 315/35/17's in the rear.

'91 Stumpjumper Pro.

Had the bike lying around built it up 9spd rear single ring in the front. A bit of please don't hit me reflective tape. Ride right past the gas station and straight to the coffee shop everyday

At high speed, no way, power is everything.

0 to 60, pretty close, edge going to the cobra

assuming you haven't added a billion hp

Ummm...no. Not unless you are driving against the world's slowest driver on wornout tires. 2000lb/150hp = 13.3lb/hp. My supercharged Bullitt 3100lb/410rwhp = 7.56lb/hp. I'd love to see your Miata go sub-4 to 60 or do the 1/4 mile in 11.8 like mine. But lets leave timeslip boasting to the guys at Streetfire. I will agree that autocrossing is really expensive on 315s in back and 275s up front. Smile

For gas pains I use GasX. Works better than Tums. I found that the newer version of Immodium works better than the old stuff. The old stuff would make me kinda bloated, but they put in an additive like a small dose of GasX and it seems to negate the feeling.

Edit: Actually the new Mustang GT is closer to 4000lb and typically runs around 265ish at the rear wheels. That's 15lb/hp which is pretty sad. My Bullitt could outrun one of those before I put on the supercharger...which incidentally nearly doubled my rwhp and I lost approximately 1mpg.

If I didn't have to drive to several hospitals before I get to the office at 8:30, I'd walk. I only live 2 mi from my office. Of course my fixie would be nice.
No way would I ride the routes I'd have to ride at that time of the day with these nuts on the road. Besides, I'd have to leave before 5 am and have to shower, so leave at 4:30 most days.

I can squeeze 48 MPG out of my Hyundai. So it's not "painful" to drive. It's just annoying. The less I drive the more I hate it. I ride a Downtube folding bike to work. This is the first year when I have more miles on my bikes than on my car! Whoo hoo!

For the rainy day commute, the VW TDI averages out to about 48 mpg.
For the fair weather commute ride the fixie.
Maine drivers seem sane enough to not need to run either into a ditch.

I have bastardized my Olmo w/Campy for my fall/winter rides to work - it's got a goofy hydrotail fender off the rear, and my seattube bottle holdere holds my coffee mug :-). I get some funny looks but it works for me, and come nicer weather, she'll clean up real nice.... but yes, we traded both cars in for one that is slilghtly more fuel efficient that either of the two, and we ride or take transit when not schlepping the kids around. One of the best decisions we've made - the difference in operating expenses will pay for a very nice vacation!

wow. that's old.
i had a 90, either an MB-5 or an MB-4, don't remember. Gave it up in 02. It was dying, and the parts were all SunTour.

As for the original question - I'd been biking to work a bunch on my 80s univega. As it gets dark early I'm biking less. Mass transit prices have held steady, though, so that's what I've been doing.
for me to go to work, driving is around the dumbest option. no way i could beat the train. it's 20 calm minutes v. 45 stressful ones.

I would gladly sell my car, there is only one reason I keep the thing.
My girlfriend lives out in the middle of no where, no bus, no biking at night.
If it wasn't for her, I would never use a car, ...women

I almost bought one of those and still may pick one up. I went with the Tricross so I could hit dirt and bang curbs with fewer worries.
