Garmin Edge 500 in stock at my LBS
Can't Post
I got a note today from my LBS that they received the Edge 500 today. Has anyone else seen them and taken the plunge. I'm considering driving over there tomorrow, and was curious if anyone has used one yet.
Regards!

I've played with one but opted not to purchase. Biggest improvement is the mounting system. That DC Rainmaker guy has a kind of soft review on his blog.

We're expecting our first ones in the next couple of days. I'll post some input once we get a chance to play with it!

Any update on the 500 now that you've used it for a few months? Thanks.

I still like it, but still find quirks in it.
Yesterday for example I did a trainer workout and it droped the power meter signal approximitely every 60 seconds, for about 10 seconds each time (for the whole hour). Of cousre, in doing so - it also dropped cadence. I saw this once before about a week or two ago (also saw dropping of both HR and speed sensor). I haven't figured out why it did this, as it's very odd. Normally it's fine. No obvious electronic interference this time (no phones, etc...), so I'm kinda stumped. I had it mounted on the top tube about a foot forward of the seat - or basically about as close as I could get it to the PM and still see it.*
That aside, I do like it, but just wish some of the quirks would go away.
(Here's a
link to the TP version to
see for yourself what it looks like, really weird. Oh, and that 3 minute gap in the start is when I rebooted and then repaired the 500 in hopes it would fix it...it didn't).

Wait.a.sec...are you calling me review 'limp'? As in not hard core? Cause that's just gimp. ;)

Funny, I just found your review by googling it - didn't notice your username here.
Very nice review, BTW.
I have an Edge 305 w/cadence sensor accessory. Is the 500 compatible with this sensor or will I have to get a new one?
Also looking at the forerunner 405 and 310XT...do you know whether my cadence sensor is compatible with these as well? Thanks for your help!

Yes, the 405, 310, and the 500 all work with the same Garmin cadence sensor you already own.

Thanks. What about the HRM that I use with my Edge 305? Do you know whether that's compatible with the Edge 500/310XT/405?
Thanks again for your help!

All the garmin devices use the same HRM strap, you're good to go...

Just did my first workout today as I picked it up. I am a FR305 user. Edge 500 is very easy to set up and use. Worked fine for the first time. dcrainmaker has a review that I will not even try to touch. Just read his stuff.
I like it so far, will see.

DCRainmaker's review is indeed quite thorough. I am an Edge 500 user and his review was very important in my decision.

Two things with the 500 aggravate me, but I’m pretty sure at least one of these has been mentioned in reviews on ST:
1) Getting HR zone information onto the unit can be a pain (at least if you’re a Mac user),
2) If you’re using an indoor trainer, there can be an issue with its “Smart Recording” and extracting usefully HR data. For my set up at least, I had tried to use the 500 for HR only (no power meter and no cadence or speed sensors) and the HR data would be close to useless for TrainingPeaks because the recorded HR data were too intermittent (ie a 2 hour ride would record 30min of HR data). If anything, I was just ticked that I couldn’t set it to 1 second recording like my Forerunner. Not a deal breaker, but I had to change my indoor trainer set up because of it.

You likely had the auto start on and the GPS was cutting in/out causing the sporadic HR readings.

Yes, but was the auto start on or off.

Ah, gotcha. I did not turn off the auto start, but in the times I used it on the trainer I don't recall it displaying "auto pause" during a ride nor do I remember the timer ever stopping.
Don't get me wrong, Garmin Training Center and TrainingPeaks will display what appears to be a full HR data set in the ride graph, but if you look at the underlying points they can be few and far between, creating a problem when you ask TrainingPeaks to sum time in zones. That said, I would bet that you wouldn't run into this problem if you had more data inputs, such as power and cadence.

I see - that is odd. Although, I've never NOT used my power meter on the trainer ;-)
Just finally got WKO+ to download directly from the edge 500 (the new *.fit files) and not converting from Garmin training center (which sucks).

how hard would it have been for them to put a couple of routes in so you could cue sheet the races/rides?
otherwise it looks great on paper.
