Everybody knows Fignon lost because he was a comparatively crappy time trialist using a funny-bike with pursuit bars as his aero position. Lemond won because he was the first to use aerobars and as everyone knew, he was a better TTist.

Now it seems odd that you say that because I was watching some of the YouTube Tour de France videos from the year that Stephen Roche had his amazing ride and one of the commentators (might even have been Ligget but I can't remember) was remarking on how Fignon was a strong time trialist and relied on those stages to make up time, at times. Did Fignon change over the years? Was the announcer just uninformed? Or did you just mean "comparatively" in regards just to Lemond and nobody else?

I've been known to run a front disc from time to time...

Man, I love youtube.

Every time I think of 'front road disc', I think of this clip here (btw, Phil was, as usual, mistaken--there was no blowout, he just lost control of the disc). Notice he wasn't even that close to the curb when he started to lose it.

A disc is legal to run in TT's, but it's silly. The only yaw angles at which a disc would be faster than the fastest spoked wheels would be the yaw angles at which the wheel would be completely uncontrollable.

To me, the amazing thing is that he almost stood back up while moving- sort of like ice skating backwards. I bet there are some amazing saves from crashes out there- off to Youtube...

As it turns out, what you have is less important than what you do with it...
