Freak bike accident photos (open w/ caution - photos not very pleasant)!
Well, I've had 3 of my team members go down in freak accidents last week. One simple tip over in a driveway and fracturing a humerous (requiring ORIF/plate screws). Freak fixie accident with broken skull, neck, clavicle (chain sucked up something), and a stick through the leg while cycling on a perfectly safe trail (Loveland bike trail) in a group. All experienced cyclists in their 40's. Though you might enjoy these couple :)

BE SAFE out there!

Dude, that is gnarly!! Were those all "Gears for Beers" folks? Man, I hope no one has permanent damage (especially the guy with skull and neck injuries). My thoughts go out to all of them...

that went waaaaaaaaay in there! Almost looks fake, like it was glued on on both sides. Would have expected more blood stains on the other side of the stick.

wonder what the +2 written on the left foot means.

Seriously though, damn, I hope he is OK and had a full recovery, tht looks awful.

The +2 is for palpation of the dorsal pedis pulse. One of the first things you worry about with an injury like that is vascular compromise.

Oddly, the tibia (shin) was intact, but the fibula was fractured.

Spot - Yes, a G4Ber (did well at IMLou as well with a top 10 AG finish I think). Others were my Zephyr Wheelsports mates. Makes me a little skiddish during cross season for sure!

I don't have pics, but my chef was playing soccer 2 weeks ago and tripped over his own untied shoe lace. He had a double compound fracture of his right arm. Broke both bones in the forearm requiring 5 hours of surgery. I told him I was going to buy him shoes with velcro ties from now on!

Please be sure to tie your shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Of course, my first thought on seeing this was, "that looks like a challenge to image." Wonder whether the tech was able to shoot anything other than a lateral view.

Immediate second thought, though, was best wishes for speedy recovery to him. What a bizarre piece of bad luck.

LOL! Funny how we all see things differently based on our job/experiences, etc.

Yeah, I think an AP would be pretty tough :) I have seen the X-rays too which are awesome (bit of an oblique obviously!).

I didn't post the other photo of his face for obvious reasons, but he is in VERY good spirits. MUCH better than I would be (and I don't think it was the Demerol).

I could so totally make a great 3D wall poster of this if I scanned him. (Not that that would really justify the radiation exposure, but still, it'd be really cool.)

Did he get to keep the stick, or at least the pieces of it?

How did he manage to get that branch through his leg?
And, you're right, It's hard to believe that his tibia is ok....And his artery. He does have reassuringly pink toenails.

Same way you break your humerus in your driveway or your skull on a fixie - freak accidents like I said! Honestly, I have no idea. When I heard of the injury right after, I just assumed a much smaller, pointy stick - never imagined a branch of this size!!! But, I've seen enough strenge injuries to never second guess anything. You should see what a hockey puck hitting your skate from a slapshot can do (a more recent nasty injury I saw this week).

It's a fake. A saw this on another website in which they show the leg makeup prior to adhering the stick. If you not how the rounded, even smoothed ends of the stick as they didn't use on from the forest, but from the "back lot".

Looks good though.

LOL!

Getting the rest of the photos now ... Can't believe someone would post "fake", but this is an internet forum I guess ... The flat edges are from where the paramedics (or whoever picked him up) sawed off the even bigger branch. I have no idea why they didn't make it a little closer!

I suppose I could scan the OR record, ER admission sheet, etc. That would do, no!

Geez ...

I thought the same about the stick with no significant amount of tissue or blood on it.

Would think it would have gone from anterior to posterior...because of a) direction of travel a cyclist is usually going, and b) that knobby part of the stick on the part anterior to his leg would have torn the wound up if coming posterior to anterior.

So...how did at leat 12 inches of stick get through to the back without more blood?
Unless he went into quick vasoconstriction (plausible).

And rroof...from your original post, I realize you deal in feet and not arms, but it's humerus. ;) These accidents are certainly NOT humorous.

Nothing fun ever happens in the primary care office... aside from the guy infarcting in front of my eyes for a second time last week (no, it really wasn't fun).

I wish him a speedy and healthy recovery. He needs to make posters out of those photos!

Oh and the confirmation is that the "flat edges are from where the paramedics (or whoever picked him up) sawed off the even bigger branch". So, a eight foot piece of lumber found its way through a dudes leg, and the paramedics cut it down to four foot.......................come on?!

It does look awesome though............

Wow - that is a little out of character for you.

I actually chuckling a little, thinking that someone wouldn't believe that a guy who fixes broken people would have some pretty amazing photos now and again.

BTW, if you've got a way to post the films, that might help to convince the skeptical. (Of course, I'm probably the only nerd here who's interested in seeing them.)

Freak "accidents" sometimes defy logic. I once came into work when I was a resident anesthesiologist and there was a fellow waiting to go into surgery that had a pool cue jammed into his nose and up into his brains. It had been sawed off but he is lying there on the gurney with abut 8 inches of pool cue in his head and only about an inch showing out his nose. Incredibly it missed everything important (although it is not clear based upon why he was in the situation that caused this to occur that there was a lot of "important" stuff up there to protect) and he walked out of the hospital pretty much the way he was.

i do not know the rider, but i have been on that bike path as recently as this weekend with my gf, and also right after the storm (no power for 4 days --> boredom --> cruise the trail). as to the credibility of the photo, i can certainly attest to the condition of the trail as making the accident possible. (also, why would rod lie about this?)

so here's my little contribution for the non-believers:

even as recently as sunday, there were hundreds of medium sized branches on the side of the trail between milford and loveland. i didn't see any on the trail itself, but if you strayed off in the right spot, you could easily end up with a shin full of tree similar to that photo.

a few days after the storm (a few weeks ago), there were trees and branches all over the place. i had to cyclocross probably 10 downed trees that covered the entire path, and there were countless branches and sticks that i had to bunnyhop/avoid. from what i can gather, the incident took place on sep. 23-ish, which would put it about a week after the storm, and a few days after my ride.

here's to a speedy recovery for that guy, and especially for the fractured skull guy. stay safe out there, everyone.

Interesting mechanism:

25 mph forward motion of rider +/- forward motion of pedalling leg, branch kicked up by rider in front so pinned under that rider's tire, branch hits lower leg perpendicular, along the lateral anterior surface of the tibia, probably angled slightly medially, hits the tibia (glancing) and deflects laterally into and through/between the tissues. Lower leg held firmly in place by pedal and flexed knee. Voila.

Considering the angle and the penetration, he's also lucky that it didn't completely blow out the achilles tendon.

And I agree, I worked ambulances and Air Force ER for a long time, you see some seriously weird crap. Like the guy with his **** stuck in an upright vacuum cleaner...

Rod, I just saw this thread, saw you as the orig poster, and wondered if this was the freak accident I was thinking of...and it is. I was NOT on the ride on that day, but was with the group the following morning. The group got real quiet when we hit the trail. Some pictures were sent later that week and one of the fellow riders said our subject's spirits were good (there's even a picture with him giving the THUMBS UP sign with the branch still in his leg). He had sent me his IMLou race report and he is definitely a "glass half full" kind of person.

It took awhile, but I finally discovered that its not the destination that's important, but rather the journey.

Dude... That's way fake, eh?

It'd have to be way more mangled to get through the tibia and fibula in there and there'd be much more in the way of bruising around the wound itself. Also, the foot would be lacking in colour because of the lack of blood and there's no real swelling!

If you're going to go through that much trouble, at least do it up a bit more...
