First crash today...ick Can't Post

I don't remember where I read it, but there is a phrase that has always haunted me: "There are two types of riders, those that have fallen and those that will fall."

I was riding today and the roads/paths were a bit wet, some standing puddles but nothing horrible. I was going down a steep but short hill and at the bottom I turned slightly and the back wheel slipped a little. Couldn't see it, but it felt like maybe 3 inches to the right. I made sure the wheel wasn't flat, it wasn't, and chalked up the slippage to the rain. About a quarter mile later I was going over a wooden bridge, the back wheel slipped right and I slammed the bike down at about 17mph. I broke a toe strap, knocked the chain off, but other than that damage "appears minimal."

I gathered myself shook some road dirt off, put the chain back on and inspected the bike. I know very little about bikes so by my eye it looks fine. I got back on the bike and rode about an eighth of a mile and the wheel slipped right again at which point I decided to walk. I personally thank the 6 cars that drove by without checking on me(2 of which witnessed the crash). And the douche bag on the mountain bike and camelback who rode past my bleeding/mud soaked body without even a "you OK"

I was a good 3 miles from home still, so after walking a mile I got the courage to coast the bike home at about 7-10 mph. The entire time I could hear a noticeable clicking that the bike did not make pre-fall.

I am having a hard time deciding if the wheel slippage was weather or mechanical. Furthermore I am a little freaked to get back on the bike a dry day and experiment at 20mph. Any suggestions?

You probably read it in the thread on my crash a week or so ago. Not sure, but it sounds like something isn't right with the bike. You should have that much slippage if you aren't riding on ice, so get it over to a shop and have them check it over.

Good that you weren't hurt! Knowing my smart ass, I'd have said something along the lines of "Yeah, I'm mostly ok, thanks for checking!" to the douche on the MTB. F'n mounties. (Well, road riders are roadies, right?)

Are your tires old? Do you use the rear tire in a trainer? From my experience that can increase the wear and make it slick.

Very good thing you weren't hurt. That totally sucks that no one said anything. I always check on riders when they are on the side of the road, regardless of whether they have a mtn bike, aero bars, a fixie or a Townie. Should be part of the culture.

And definately get it checked out by your local bike shop.

Tires about 3 weeks old, not time on trainer.

I think you are both right about getting it to a shop for a look over. Thanks guys.

How I read your post it seems that you are new to cycling?

So:

Did you check if your skewer was closed?
Can you wiggle your wheel left/right when clamped down in the dropouts?

Could be a broken axle or defective hub.

Or underinflated tire
