Favorite Phil Liggett TDF Quote Thread....

Love Phil Liggett's play by play so much better than the night crew. Maybe it is just the slang he uses. On todays stage he said something like....

"There will be a lot complaining that today was too hard, but the winners never complain"

Something like that...Pretty cool; classic Liggett, any other favorites out there.....

after about a minute of dead air, the camera in the helicopter pans to a castle ... ligget, with excitement: "... would you just LOOK at that buttress!"

I think it was Paul, not Phil, but I like "he's the cat amongst the pigoens".

My favorites are from the '87 Tour stage that finished in La Plagne. May not be exact quotes as it's been a while since I've seen the footage - available on youtube.

"armed with a willing group of men out for the day's spoils"

"now Roche must show the sort of courage that makes some men greater than others"

was Phill the first to say, "on the rivet"?

"dancing on the pedals" is great, too

Great idea for a thread!!! Some of their lines are hilarious; even my wife laughs at them and she has no idea what is actually going on with the bike racing.

“He’s dancing on the pedals in an immodest way…….”

“He’s wearing the mask of pain!!”

“The elastic has snapped and Ulrich is now rolling backwards!!”

“His suitcase of courage is empty”

**All of these words finding themselves together were greatly astonished and delighted for assuredly, they had never met before**

Whenever he mentions Nick or Stephen Roche, I get really excited and imagine it's about me (somewhat uncommon name).

Roche is really digging deep in his man-purse of testicular fortitude!

Then I go out and ride about 1/6th the distance as the Tour guys and call it a day :)

I don't know if anyone remembers when Cycling News used to have the "David Duffield commentary bingo" in their Tdf guide many years back. Duffield was a Eurosport commentator using phrases and quotes that makes Ligget sound coherent.. Anyway, it was pretty funny stuff.

That was Paul I think. It's a reference to the old Brooks saddles that had an adjustment nut up front.

"Dancing on the pedals" is definitely a PL original, and classic.

I love the way Phil always manages to pronounce riders names, teams, etc. differently every time. Back when T-Mobile was racing I heard him call them Tee-Moe-Bill, Tee-Moe-Beel, and Tee-Moe-Byle all in the course of a few minutes.

I always look forward to late in the Tour in the mountains, when Phil will always say, "And the heads of state have come to the fore."

During Stage 3 he was talking about some Italian rider that had wrecked and said "Italians never do well at the Tour de France. Perhaps it's because they don't serve enough spaghetti."

I get a kick out of how PL mis-identifies riders. You get a feeling that PS wants to correct him, but doesn't want to interrupt PL's when he's on a roll. By the time he does have a chance, it's on to the next subject. LOL.

"Now it's time for the fancy men of the Tour."

Or something like that on prologue day when the last 15 guys were ready to start.

From Stage 2:

"The teams are setting up their lead-outs for their sprinters...loading the missile (pronounced mis-aisle) into the tube..."

Forget the riders...Phil is on form this year like never before.

With the Versus gig, broadcast TV, cable, satellite, and online, Phil and Paul have to be crushing it. I have to imagine that the now employ a phalanx of interns to keep the lines coming.
