Re: 18 September [Crmurphy] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think 3x8K plus a long run may be excessive since you have barely been running. maybe 4x8K is sufficient and keep doing that for 6 months before you go any further on intensity or speed.

Sorry, but there is no free lunch when it comes to running. Consistency over many months/years is key. Don't even dream about jacking up intensity yet.

Speaking of which I it is Friday afternoon and I did not make a priority to run during the day (slept in and was put on an analyst conf call over lunch)....in other words I did not make running a priority above sleep and yapping to analysts about technology, both of which were higher up the food chain today . I have a 45 minute window now before riding home for dinner, so time to head out. I can catch up with work over the weekend.

You probably didn't have as much free time because you were in a real grad program.

Do they offer fake grad programs? It's highly contradictory to imply that someone took the easy way out in grad school, because grad school is whatever you make of it. For me, it was hard and time consuming because I put in the hard, long hours. It was my priority above anything else.

I'm genuinely impressed by TC's time dedicated to training (what I call free time, these days). It's not a commentary on my current "lack of free time" because I use my time exactly how I want to. I'm envious because I didn't have any worthwhile passions to get me out of the lab, and redirect my energy for a few hours on any given day. In the end, I graduated with an extremely valuable degree, but I reflect on it as 2+ years in which I did zero living. That's time lost, never to be returned. I have a feeling that TC will look back on her grad school experience more favorably than I.

(pink) I think it's really cool when people judge a program when (1) they probably have no idea what I'm in grad school for or where I am and (2) they don't know any details of said program. (pink) Not aimed at you, aimed at whoever started that comment.

My current life is school, training, and that's about it. My social life does not exist outside of my other little group of grad students in the program and that's perfectly fine with me. I adore it - I get to train, and study some really cool stuff, and write a second thesis. It's awesome. I don't really know what else a person could want. Maybe a cat, I can't have one of those in my housing. But that's about all I think I'm missing out on.

It's sooooooooo much better than undergrad!

To offer unsolicited advice, keep logging the miles and save your $$$ for a new pair of running shoes. They'll get you further than a cat and they won't piss all over the place.

Not too late.

You need to use the ST Online Training Log (upper right of screen) - put your runs in since Sept 14 - and then under the challenges tab in the training log, click "fall run challenge" and "join challenge."

I am not sure if I'll run today. Had trouble sleeping last night so I might lounge around and do homework and sleep today. I'm half awake but too tired to move :(

I absolutely love running in the rain. Enjoy it!

Beautiful fall day here in Ann Arbor. Got in a nice 10k through the woods to start my day. Nothing like the fall colors to keep a run interesting.

Re: Fall Running Challenge Sep 14-Nov 14 [tigerchik] [In reply to] Can't Post

my wife has a theory about there being more oxygen in the air when it is raining thereby making running easier. While I very much doubt the science, it has helped me to get out the door and run in the rain kida sorta happily.

My run this morning was a tiny bit drizzly but not actually very wet.

You mentioned running in snow and ice. Which triathlons have snow and ice? I'd like to specifically avoid those.

How do I delete a workout? While I was putting in my runs from the weekend, I incorrectly entered yesterday's run on today's date...Can anybody help me fix it?

Re: 18 September [trackie clm] [In reply to] Can't Post

Cathy, since we don't all live in San Francisco, there are actually plenty of races around the world that involve running on snow and ice. This race was actually 85% on ice:

http://www.sportstats.ca/...g&racecode=44310

and yes, I had metal screws in my shoes for traction. You are free to avoid any race that involves snow and ice as is everyone.

But the point is not about preparing yourself for races in snow and ice. The point is that training in the real elements is useful so that when you get hit with real weather on race day, it is not a completely foreign experience. By and large, most triathlons are not run on the treadmill.

x2, and I wish people would get past this. I spend 8 years in Colorado training outdoors for x-country, and I've run/raced in some horrendous conditions. I know what to expect, so for me, I'm not giving up anything by training on the t-mill for a few months in the summer.

If you've never run in the rain and it's raining, go run. If you've never run on packed snow and it snowed yesterday, go run. Etc etc etc. Everyone knows the hoary adage "nothing new on race day", well, what happens if you are doing an early season duathlon and you get a late snow or similar?

I believe I specifically mentioned triathlons.

>>well, what happens if you are doing an early season duathlon and you get a late snow or similar?<<

HA! That would be pretty amazing around here. I've done more than a few multiple hour rides in the rain training over the winters for early season (March) IM races.

Point is: Just a little control freakish about the challenge.

Re: 18 September [trackie clm] [In reply to] Can't Post

I had a good thing going commuting to work (10 mile roundtrip), when on Thursday my achilles was hurting pretty bad in the morning. Of course I had to run home in the 100 degree heat and that made it worse. I've shelved everything this weekend and although its not sore today, I think I'm not going to try any running until Wednesday. I'll do some bikes and swims until then.

What? You mean you trained in actual WEATHER? ::gasp:: ;-)

Point is: Who cares, let it f'n go already. It's his challenge, he can be as control freakish as he wants.

I'm constantly amazed at how bent out of shape people get over the minutiae in these challenges...

Re: 18 September [trackie clm] [In reply to] Can't Post

Cathy, instead of whining , why don't you go out and train and post your workouts on this thread.

Anyway, this morning I did not feel particularly motivated to run or ride in the rain, so I went to the basement, and got on the computrainer and did a 70 min ride with 6x4 min @250-270W. So as I said, I am more than willing to train indoors at times.

My plan is to go run in the rain at lunch time. If I run in the morning, the only way I get my ride in is bike commute, which I did not feel like doing in the rain today. If I ride the trainer in the morning, I can run in the rain at lunch time, but it does mean driving to work....oh well. Plan at lunch time is to do 10K run with 10x100m, 10x200m faster than 10K race pace (the 100's and 200's)
