Re: Falling Running Challenge ???? [Murphy'sLaw] [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, between all you can eat business lunches and dinner today, I pretty well undid any good I did from the training this morning. ML, I agree that 10K per day is a lot for a triathlete, but I actually figured that most people on the running challenge and focusing mainly on running now. When I am in full blown tri season 60K per week is pretty solid for me. Last few days in Asia have been 60-90 minutes every day, but as soon as I get home, its big time biking as I just lost ~10 days of bike training. I try to get on the hotel exercise bike daily and do 20-30 minutes worth of 1-2min long high intensity intervals but with weird seat angles, fore-aft, saddle heights, saddle shapes, Q factors like you are riding a horse, crank lengths etc I just can't stand these hotel bikes for any more than 30 minutes. The good thing about being on the road, is that I actually have pool access, whether it was the 30+m outdoor pool at the hotel in China or the 12.5m pool at the hotel in Japan, I try to get some pool time in daily which is better than my "once or twice a week" at home.

Yes, I will be in the 45-49 age group in 2010....USAT gives everyone a birthday party on Jan 1, but it also means that if we are doing the same race, there is a good chance we exit T1 together.

By the way, when does your ST hiatus start. I'm wondering if you've posted the 2010 smackdown thread yet. Being on 12-13 hour time lag, I may have missed it!

Happy Birthday!

No plan to hit the Platinium club for me. Gold+/Platinium- was the plan but with surgery on Nov 5th I think I will be out at least 4 days (which I do not mind at all) and I do not plan on banking miles just for the challenge & I would rather do "as much biking" as possible since outdoor days are soon over).
But I will kick some ass during the winter run challenge (and hopefully do some swimming after 9 to 10 months off).

Fred.

OMG I'm older than you (but only by a few months) ;)
Happy b-day!
I'm out of the challenge. This calf injury is doing me in; I can ride and swim but the running isn't there. ART is helping but it's slow going. I'm in the midst of a HUGE pity party right now. Wah.

Good luck on the calf just make sure you dont "milk" it....... LOL
Did 16 miles today around a 8 min 20 second pace. Had 3 close encounters with dogs today. Strange not many all year and three in one run. Okay 8 min 20 sec pace thats a "jog" to you guys. Well I handled the dogs by running right at em and barking back. The one owner who was out there must have thought I was nuts. Anyway on my way to my first 60 mile week ever. Six mile run tommorow and a four mile run Sunday will give me 60.8 miles. You know I am doing that extra .20 miles. Probably make both runs a 10k. Then take a day off of running as bike has been neglected last three weeks or so.

No runninng today. Flew back from Japan and was wide awake at 4:30 am. Had breakfast and did a 2 hour computrainer ride averaging 220W and was pretty well done by the time my son and wife woke up. Spent the rest of the day catching up on work in a jetlagged haze. I had plans to run in the afternoon, but I'm going to take the rest of the day off running and try to put another solid day tomorrow.

TC, glad to see you are getting better. Just ease back in and you'll be good to go.

After a few runs in the cold rain this week yesterday's 70 degree or so run in the South and this morning's 50 degree run were great. Not quite ready for hats and gloves every morning just yet.

When I get back to training I am going to

not run as much
swim more
ride on the trainer frequently throughout the week

the biggest mistake I made in getting hurt was running too much.

Feeling impatient, and still in a little pain today so just resting. You know that feeling in which you just want to fast forward your life?! :-)

<< the biggest mistake I made in getting hurt was running too much. >>

Ya think? HOW LONG have folks been telling you that for?

"yes, but I really like to run". Yes, but getting injured and not being able to run *at all* SUCKS.

(I'm guilty of the same thing, I ramped up my run volume these past few weeks to prep for Philly, and now have exascerbated the issue I've been having w/ my foot. I hope to GOD it is not an oncoming stress fracture. Trying to work around it, taking days off, etc. Wish me luck... )

TC - read BarryP's awesome threads for more guidance for when you come back. I think his 1-2-3 schedule of L-run, M-runs, EZ-runs is something you should use as the MAXIMUM you should be doing. I probably do something more like 1-1-4 or 1-1-3 myself most of the time.

Several years. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I am told things, I still insist on learning them the hard way. It's an unforgiving trait.

I hope that you don't have a sfx. Do you know what you can do though - SWIM ;-)

When DD got hurt this fall his first run back was five minutes... I need to channel the self control to only run for five minutes when I am starting again...

In all seriousness, I hope that your foot issues resolve, and why are you doing Philly when you told me AmZof was supposed to be the end of the season? Anyway - GOOD LUCK - go get in the POOL!!!!!!!!! where it is hard to hurt things.

Good luck at Philly!!!!!!!!!! and I hope your foot holds out through philly and beyond. Wanted to do Philly but waited to long. Then got shut out of the 10k too. TC take it easy it is a long winter and lots of time to heal and regain. Me I m waiting till afternoon to run . I hope the little extra recovery time will help. So in the mean time The kids and I are watching Tony Stark ( Ironman ). Just happened to be on. Another weird thing the average mph setting on my car has been reading 26.2 for two days now. Funny something is telling me if you run the legs will be okay.

Re: Falling Running Challenge ???? [tigerchik] [In reply to] Can't Post

TC,

OK, sounds like you have reached "step 1" in the healing process, and I'm not talking about healing the injury, but fixing the grey matter between your ears which is what truly needs to be fixed. Look, we all push things way too hard, too long, too often. The difference between you, 90% of ST and me is that I'm actually wrapping up my 25th season in a row of racing triathlon. You don't get to where I am (and still putting down some all time PB's) without making all the dumbest mistakes in the book, but being fortunate enough to either overcome them through:
  1. "early intervention",
  2. reasonably good biomechanics,
  3. healthy dosages or common sense
  4. combination of all of the above

So if I offer up some input on what you might want to do and not, take it for what it is worth. Like you, I am driven to train way too much for my good, however, I do have a database of 25 years of mistakes that I can draw on when things start to go the wrong way and then try to steer clear.

Anyway, today 1:45 Computrainer ride with 1:14.45 TT on a 40K TT course with >2000 ft of climbing averaging 227W. I was hoping to do 235 average, but just did not have the legs. Then put on the running shoes and ran 1:10 (15K), with 30 minutes at half Ironman race pace, and my legs felt great. Some days you just can't do what you want on the bike, but you can on the run....other days it is the opposite. The days you can fly on the bike and run seem to be rare. The only time that seems to happen is when I "hit it full throttle" on a race day....but I guess that's why it is race day.

Ugh been out since Wed with Swine flu. Finally feeling up to an easy run today. I was aiming for 400km, but I'll be happy to get to 350... At least it wasn't that bad a flu - I've had worse - and now I don't need no stinkin vaccine LOL

Amazed at everyone's progress - maybe next year I'll be at that volume!

Hey, glad that you are feeling better...hear ya about the vaccine. Initially I was not going to bother with the vaccination, and probably still won't, but when there is enough for "general availability" I will get my 13 year old vaccinated. I was certainly pretty overwhelmed by the story of the 13 year old who died from swine flu this week. Can't imagine being the father.

7.2 today makes just over 40 for the week. Today was day 20 in a row for me. Tomorrow the EN out season plan starts so will be layering a lot of trainer time on top of the running. Should be great.

Getting peer pressured into doing a local 15k next weekend, willing to bet that it is going to HURT.

Dude...that is awesome....looks like you are on track for sub 2:50 at Sacramento! I came back from Japan and between jetlag, bad weather and lack of riding, I bagged on the Beat Beethoven half marathon yesterday and spent the last 3 days focused on either riding against CT "metal man" or riding hills in the Gatineau Park. Today was 90K 3hour on the nose, 186 Ave watts, 2020 Kjoules, but most importantly did 18 intervals while in the hills, at 250-340W (1 to 8 min in length, so the shorter they were, the harder)....then 7K transition run and in the afternoon 3 more K of sprinting with the kids that I coach mixed in with 4K of hiking.
