Early Morning Training - Too Lazy Can't Post

I raced my last race of the year just over a month ago. Following that race I took some time off to recover and relax for a while. Now, I have been trying to get back into the regiment and I can't get myself out of bed before about 7 anymore. I have tried putting the alarm clock across the room, jumping out of bed...no luck. I am very persuasive and I am able to convince myself to stay in bed every morning. So, I put it to you Sters..what has works for you...what gets you out of bed...(I know, HTFU, but what else)

It's probably all in the mind. One of the things that got me focused for the next season was to maybe take some time to plan for it...what "A" races are you going to do, what minor races you might be interested in, etc. Then actually start to go ahead and tentatively develop intermediate steps toward your 2010 goals. More often than not just the act of planning for next year has refocused my mind (as well as most of my athletes) and gotten me back into training again, and maybe might help you get up for your morning workouts as well.

I always equate it to going to the gym to lift: once you're there, no matter how tired you are, you're good to go...it's the getting there that's tough, especially when you don't have a routine down. After a few days of consistent training you're back in a groove.

Force yourself to get up for a few days, even if you do a quick 20 minute loop around the neighborhood or 20 laps in the pool...before long it'll be like clockwork.

Re: Early Morning Training - Too Lazy [djciii] [In reply to] Can't Post

I've pretty much fallen into the same rut... Last year it was much easier to HTFU around this time, having had to pony up the $$ for an IM so far in advance, but this year I don't have any money on the table already. Like someone else posted, I need to find something on the calendar for next year to commit to so I'll have the proverbial axe hanging over my head again.

One would think that if you got back into the regiment, reveille would wake you up.

No brainer. Do what I do and train at night. Most nights I start around 9:30-10:00 pm, if I'm going long maybe a little earlier. (last night I didn't get started till 11:20 because those damn Saints couldn't put Atlanta away), In bed for 1:00 to 1:30, up at 7:00 to 7:15.

Haha! that thing would be more challenging than the workout itself with my high bedroom ceilings. I can only imagine my dog's reaction to something shooting off every morning at 4 am.

I think you should stay in bed.

That way I'll have one less person to beat out for a podium in our local races.

Stay in bed, it's really cold outside.
Yeah, I'm out there training so I can crush your dreams...but go back to sleep and dream some more!

Re: Early Morning Training - Too Lazy [djciii] [In reply to] Can't Post

I've noticed the same pattern this time of year - hard to get out of bed for those morning workouts for whatever reason:

Less daylight
Colder temperatures
No races on the horizon

Then I realized that I had been in a solid workout regiment for 9-10 months straight with little time off. I wasn't burned out like when ramping up those high mileage weeks prepping for an IM, but overall motivation was lacking.

So the last several years I just give it a break for about 2 months - whatever training I WANT to do, I do. If I don't want to get out of bed, I won't. By mid-December I'm chomping at the bit to lay the winter mileage foundation. The biggest surprise to me was that by March/April, I've actually been faster than the years when I just kept plowing away at it all Fall, all Winter with no break.

Tad

It took awhile, but I finally discovered that its not the destination that's important, but rather the journey.

Re: Early Morning Training - Too Lazy [djciii] [In reply to] Can't Post

Its all about practice. You need to practice waking up. I read about this here somewhere. Basically before you go to sleep, set your alarm clock about 2 minutes ahead of the current time. Make sure that you have everything together for the morning. Lay down and turn off the lights, make it like it would be in the morning. Pretend you are asleep. When the alarm goes off, get up and do the first few things you would do in the morning. Do this about 5 or 6 times. Then go to sleep. That should get you going, don't forget to reset your alarm. Also have a bet with someone. If you don't get up and go to the gym you have to buy them a Freebirds SuperMonster burrito or whatever is the equivalent in your area. In Austin they are $12 so if stay in bed you are losing money. Remember it takes 21 days to start a habit, so don't skip on the weekends. Three weeks that is all you have to do.

Re: Early Morning Training - Too Lazy [djciii] [In reply to] Can't Post

I had a little trouble getting back into the morning routine. What the one poster said about making it a habit was the best way for me. Start to get out of bed and do something- couple mile run or swim a few laps. Whatever it is, just getting out of bed and doing something should get you in the routine.
The other big thing I found that helped was changing my diet back to what it should be. I had really let myself go (salmon with steamed veggies dinners became beer with beer dinners) and when I wanted to get back into the swing of things it was easier after I got my diet back to normal.
