How long should should be left between donating blood and an endurance (3hours +) training session.

That's very individual based on your size and Hct. I can't give blood and train because I'm too small and anemic. But a big guy could probably make it work within about 24 hours. Takes at least several hours to re-equilibrate your fluid volume. Will take about 4 weeks to get that blood back (In my case more like 6).

I know for me it takes about 2 weeks to recover fully from giving blood. I don't do anything active for 24 hours after donation and I limit myself for 48 hours. I do not rely on my body to be able to perform at peak function for about 2 weeks. Until then I notice that I get tired/worn out faster and it seems that I need longer to recover. This is one of the reasons I do not donate blood often. I have a job where I am fairly active so it is not just a training thing for me.

I am a 5 gallon donor and still give blood regularly, but not closer than 2 weeks before a moderate event, 4 weeks before a big event. In my crazy, convoluted thought processes, I think giving blood and then working out actually helps train the body to get by on less oxygen, similar to high altitude training.
I gave a double red blood cell donation one time and it damn near killed me. I was totally exhausted after minimal training.

I started a thread on the general subject in February. You might find some of the info in it helpful.

Well, you're just stingy! ;-)
In my younger days, I use to donate regularly, and could ride or run easy after work the same day. I haven't donated in a while (NJ is a hard state to donate on a schedule) so I don't know if that response pattern still holds.
