Does anyone even care about the Tour anymore? Can't Post

I don't. Not too much to get excited about. I may watch some of it to catch some Liggitisms. But other that, who cares?

Whats the point? I'll tell you the results without naming names.
2 teams will be kicked on the 9th day of racing. Top 2 favorites will be accused of doping and finally they will confess and leave. An unknown russian or eastern european will get the overall win.
There won't be major US presence but still French will accuse USA to taint the tour. Oh Lance will start dating someone famous at his half age.
At the end everybody will lose but LeMond declair victory and announce he is actually French not American

I still watch. I feel the spectacle and beauty of the event is something bigger than individual riders or teams.

You forgot to clarify that the 2 kicked off will be protest, claiming that they were forced to confess, and that they tested positive only after eating Chipotle burritos laced with anabolically injected black beans...

sorta...kinda...not really...no....

i wasn't a lance fan and was really looking forward to enjoying the post-lance era (as i enjoyed the pre-lance era and the first couple years of the lance era even) but all of the bullshit clouding the tour year after year has grown tiresome and sad.

Why don't you care? Is it because you feel they're all drug cheats?

Did you not know that in a race all runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

Triathletes will never get it....the tour is great, but pro cycling as a sport is truly wonderful.

You started a thread just so you could tell everyone what you don't care about? Seriously? Man, even Frank Day doesn't start threads this dumb.

There's races other than the Tour that really deserve more attention. The Giro was a lot of fun and I can guarantee you that the Vuelta is going to be mind-blowing, with Contador on home turf.

I still watch, and love doing so. First of all, it was a foregone conclusion that as soon as one of their boys was out, 90% of Americans would stop watching. That's the American way. Secondly, Cycling is about the only sport where doping is actually enforced(yes, the Olympics are starting to do it too, but people don't care that much), and used as a weapon by different teams and nationalities against one another. I doubt that you would ever see the Mariners accusing the Yankees of doping after losing a 7 game series 5-2.

Regardless, as much as the doping scandals, the self-righteous French authorities, and others detract, I still love watching these guys hammering up the mountains. It gets me jazzed to ride my bicycle and about bicycling in general.

I watched the tour long before Lance...and I'll be watching it long after. I would watch it if not even a single U.S. citizen were racing.

It is one of the great races in the world.

I too care........the TdF is the greatest athletic event in sports.......I also watched it before Lance when all there was was 30 minutes a day on ESPN. I wasn't even a triathlete then, just a recreational fitness enthusiast.

It too doesn't matter even if no american ever raced in it ever again.

Like DeGaul once said I believe during the Algerian war and the social turmoil of the day, "The Tour must always go on."

Wait. Now I am confused. You posted to this thread to tell everyone that you don't care about threads telling everyone what the original poster cares about.

Re: Does anyone even care about the Tour anymore? [VegasTrilete] [In reply to] Can't Post

I watch every pro race I can find footage of, even if it is in german. Some people like nascar or football, I like bike races.
The Tour is so cool because everyone is training to peak there. The other 2 are beautiful, but everyones A game goes to the tour. What's not to love?

I'm not really super interested in who wins what, 5 hours in the saddle and 3 guys finishing within a half second is pretty exciting. Take last year- that youngster last year who decided he was going to win a brutal mountain stage or kill himself trying? That's good stuff! I even really liked watching the guys who got booted, I was a little disappointed, but more like the way I felt when Mr Z crashed over some railroad tracks stage 2 of the Giro than filled with indignation like I'm supposed to be at Barry Bonds. It's all part of it.

You can watch football as a corporate structured team event with rigid roles and team strategies with flashes of individual greatness within the structure. A bike race is much more a society unto itself, with most acting in either self interest or towards small tribal concerns. The real rules are unwritten, like pack behavior and not contesting the last stage amongst the overall winners. Americans seem unable to relish that level of sportsmanship. I watched the Philadelphia and saw an appalling lack of civility coupled with mediocre team work produce a weak event. I wanted to throw a stick in the spokes of a couple riders it was so gross.

I'd prefer Levi to be there, but Astana has decided to dominate every single race they have been in this year knowing they are not going to the tour.
I know I can count on Voight to take off out of nowhere and shake things up. I know Thor is going to use that tree trunk body to do something crazy, and that Ricco is going to suprise somebody . Not knowing when, coupled with the smug feeling of foresight, makes me feel cool and anxious at the same time.

Re: Does anyone even care about the Tour anymore? [aerobike] [In reply to] Can't Post

Started watching in 1984 and still love it. Cycling had as much doping as every other pro sport, they simply have done more then any other sport to fight doping and thus people get caught and publicized. It also doesn't hurt that cycling is not a sport that makes the media money, so it is an easy target. It's pretty naive to think cycling is worse then any other sport.

As I write this I am flipping between Le Tour and British Grand Prix Qualifying.

YES! just because you don't doesn't others won't. Hell I could givea crap whether EVERYONE decides they don't care about Le Tour anymore, it is still the most exciting time of the year in cycling for me. I love the French country side as well as the racing itself.

I'm a watcher and supporter for life.

The drugs will never trump my love for cycling and this grand old race.

I'll watch highlights of the time trials and mountain top finishes. If Cancellara beats all the sprinters with a "surprise" finish, I might watch a replay of the last 10kms of that. Aside from that, it's all about as exciting as watching paint dry ... on TV anyway. If I were there to see the spectacle in person I'm sure I'd be more excited.

Oh ... I'm sure I'll end up watching highlights of the sprint finishes to see if Robbie head butts anybody or if anyone finally decides to punch his lights out. I can see Robbie and Cavendish gettin' into it, eh?

I love bike racing. Racing myself and watching on TV. It's an amazing sport. I can't stop watching even if it is a little corrupted. If I didn't have a swimming and running problem I would be perfectly happy cycling and racing. I have the Tour on right now as I type. I will be riding in an hour then will watch the re run of the tour later.

Yeah, it's kinda sad that most people here only pay attention to the Tour as the racing at the Vuelta and the Giro is usually better.

"Yeah, it's kinda sad that most people here only pay attention to the Tour as the racing at the Vuelta and the Giro is usually better. "

Unfortunately, it's much harder to watch the Vuelta or Giro or any other cycling than it is to watch the Tour. Versus will pretty much cancel its rodeo and fishing coverage for 3 weeks so we can watch the Tour, whereas they only covered the Giro for a couple hours one day a week. Most people don't want to watch racing on a computer. It's a vicious circle. People don't watch other races because there's not much coverage, and there's not much coverage because not too many people watch those races.

Yeah, good point. I watch all the races on the computer, including the Tour, but most don't do that and really the only cycling on TV in the states is the TdF.

In response to your question: YES.

Here's a Liggitism for you which he just said: "It's (the yellow jersey) the biggest symbol in the sport."
