Those are sponges, and if they're not why did he carry them 26.2 miles farther than he need to?

I was thinking about this today during my workout. You never see these guys stopping to pee since they obviously pee on the bike, but on the run, maybe Macca was stuffing a sponge into his crotch, peeing into it, and then throwing it out. How's that for a theory? Not a bad plan for my next IM!

We checked out his bike in transition aftwards and there was no spare / CO2 / rear drink cage / bemto - nothing. He must go with on -course. We have a pic of his bike racked right next to normann's. I also have a pic of Natacsha's with broken spoke / seat and no pedals. They must have put them on the borrowed bike. I'll try and post when I get home tomorrow.

He's a specialized rider... I'm guessing we see something about armadillos in the near future that says, "would you ride without a spare???? Maybe if you were running armadillos like 2007 Ironman world champ Chris Mccormack... "

Derek

PS. If anyone from specialized sees this and wants to use it, it will only cost you one new S-Works:-)

If he got a flat it would pretty much be game over as far as the win goes. Im geussing he would have just pulled out.

That Specialized frame has a lot of volume in the seatpost and seat tube area. He might have put the CO2 and tubular inside the frame. All he'd need is an allen key to get at them.

I can't believe he'd really race without a spere. The only reason why you'd do that would be if you secretly wanted an excuse to DNF.

Along those lines. My brother and I were training for our 1st IM. Along the way we ran a marathon. Wanting to try it all I said I wasn't going to stop and would just pee as I ran. When the time came we happened to be together. It went everywhere, on me, on my brother, down my legs, in my shoes seemed like it went on for 5 min. It was at the 13 mile area and my shoes were wet the rest of the run and I got blisters. I never looked behind me. I'll never do that agin : )

Re: Did Macca ride w/o a spare? [Markus Mucus] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think Macca did carry a spare CO2 and tubular inside his frame. Some athletes put drinking systems inside their frames, and if you can do that you can definitely jam a tire and Co2 inside a big carbon frame.

But if he or another Ironman rider didn't carry a spare, I can think of lots of rationalizations for not carrying a spare tire but only one reason. What other reasons do you see for not carrying a spare tire in an Ironman?

Re: Did Macca ride w/o a spare? [Hamner] [In reply to] Can't Post

Interesting:

1. Could possibly be in the pocket of his jersey

2. Could be in the bottle on the frame

3. Could have chosen to go with out and risk it

Who knows.

Probably because he realizes that 5-10 minutes gone fixing a flat, his race is done. So why carry it? That is a good reason to me.

..start of rant...

No that would be Norman Stadler...oh wait he found ANOTHER excuse to quit this time...his little belly hurt! I wish people would get off Macca's back and start calling out clowns like Stadler who seem to DNF every other time just because things are not going 100% their way. I have much more respect for a 17 hour age grouper who guts it out than I do for a clown like Norman who is nothing but a spoiled little princess that takes his ball and goes home if things are not going his way. And of course don't forget Faris the fairy whose little tummy didn't feel good either so he didn't even bother showing up to race. Maybe it is just a European thing and they are soft or something but if these guys are in such "great" shape then they should be able to race even if they are sick. Yes they might not be able to win but if they are such athletes then they should still be able to put up a decent time and do it for the love of the sport...of course you would have to actually love the sport (not the money) and we all know that isn't the case for most pros especially Norman and Faris.

Bottom line is Macca WON...deal with it!

...end of rant...

Except that you can change a flat in under 2 minutes and the top 3 men and women were separated by over 2 minutes each. A flat would not have made a difference as long as the rider had practiced changing a tire before the race.

Who are you ranting at? Did you read my post? I said that Macca carried the tire inside his frame. I like the guy and am glad he won.

If you're any kind of cyclist, it doesn't take 5-10min to change a puncture. If you ride tubulars, you're back on the road within a minute, at most two minutes. If you're riding clinchers, maybe three minutes tops. If anyone takes 5-10min, they better work on that expect of their race.

These are professional athletes. They do not race solely for "the love of sport", pride, or other such romantic notions. They (especially the Faris/Normann/etc group who can actually win) are there to... win. And bring exposure to their sponsors. So if their sponsors are cool with the DNF they should NOT be racing for pride or love. Discrestion is the better part of valor, especially when you jeapordize a future pay day to show you have guts today. Don't armchair QB another man's job.

Macca won and seemed willing to risk the dnf (assuming he wasn't carrying a spare). And that's awesome, but it's a calculated risk. At this point in his career, the Win means everything. Another top 10 isn't the goal.

Maybe he can't change a flat in that time frame, i have no idea.
I just thought the original statement was pretty ludicrous.

Re: Did Macca ride w/o a spare? [mdd] [In reply to] Can't Post

Not agreeing or disagreeing here, but just wanted to point something out. The top pros are there for the MONEY, that's it. I think they love the sport but for them it's BUSINESS. There have been examples in the past of pros in Kona calling it a day early in the bike b/c they knew they didn't have it. I think it's because some of them know that they can get a friendly pass into IMFL or other races that are close on the calendar--another chance at a payday. Can't remember who did it, but I seem to remember a pro pulling out of Kona early and then placing top 3 at IMFL.
