If you're any kind of cyclist, it doesn't take 5-10min to change a puncture. If you ride tubulars, you're back on the road within a minute, at most two minutes. If you're riding clinchers, maybe three minutes tops. If anyone takes 5-10min, they better work on that expect of their race.
If your tubulars come off that easily, then don't EVER take a turn at speed. Also, you are DRAMATICALLY INCREASING your rolling resistance if you do not glue it properly. Sort of a catch 22. Glue it properly, and you can't get it off for the <10% of races when you get a flat. Glue it improperly, so you can get it off <10% of the time, and go slower >90% of the time. Clinchers seem like a no-brainer to me. Drawbacks of clinchers are they are very hard/impossible to ride flat, and they might take a tad longer to change. I made race decisions based upon when I do not have a failure rather than limiting myself based upon something that might workout if I do have a failure.
Also, you fail to understand the importance of making the kona express. Spending a few minutes to fix a flat will mean he has to ride much harder just to keep the same pace as the lead pack.

I taped my tube and inflator inside my Giro Advantage II tail for California 70.3 this year. My neck was so stiff because of the added weight! I didn't think a couple ounces was enough to matter.
I won't be doing it again.

That sounds like a good idea and I'm glad that I haven't tried it. At least you had the ineative to give something out of the box a try. We all need and can benefit from folks you like who try different approaches to common problems. Thanks (even if it didn't work for you). Tim

Wow ... how dumb is that. Most TT enthusiasts will tell you ... a flapping number is a major no-no. When I race, I've spent as much as 45 minutes pinning a number on a skinsuit to make sure it's disrupting things as little as possible. It's a shame these top triathletes invest so much money, time and attention on all that aero equipment and the race promoter makes them do something really stupid like wear a freaking parachute strapped to their butts. I know most folks torpedo their own aerodynamics quite willingly with all the crap they load on their bikes. It's a shame for the pros, though. But hey ... it's the same for all of them, I suppose.

In your normal position, does your Giro rest on your back? My LG Rocket touches my back ... so I'm thinking the weight of something in there wouldn't bother me so much. I'll have to test it out. I know what seems fine for an hour or two can be an entirely different matter when you get to 4+ hours.

pinning?
That's sooooo 90s, you should be using spray adhesive.

It doesn't touch my back. I really didn't feel the stiffness until the next day and then I was like WOW! What could have possibly made me feel so crappy in my neck? I had ridden the distance in position many times before so the only variable was the tube taped in my helmet.
My split was right at 3 hours. Perhaps if I was to train this way a little bit it wouldn't be a big deal, but I don't want to deal with a stiff neck again during the adaptation period.

Try that in the deep south when it's 98 degrees and 98 percent humidity and your skinsuit is soaked in sweat 30 seconds after you put it on -- from the inside out. Your number will be flapping in the breeze. Been there, done that. Pinning isn't optimal, but it's reliable. And when I say pinning, I mean about 5 of the tiniest safety pins you can buy per edge of the number, all the way around.

3M #77 still flaps? That stuff seems to stay on quite well, and I sweat a lot!

Indeed it does. If you know a way to keep it from flapping, bring it ... and where were you when I posted about this before Nationals a couple of months back? I saw a little of everything going on at nationals. The most innovative was a guy who safety pinned his number from the inside. I tried that at my next race after I got home. That was nuts. Life's too short.
Anyway, I've got a huge can of 3M #77 and I've tried every technique I've read or heard about. I can't get through a race without the number coming loose at one edge or another. I can see how it would be fine on anything the least bit loose-fitting -- like a normal road racing jersey. On a very tight skin suit, as soon as I move and the fabric stretches, with sweat from underneath, things work loose.

It's just like Lightning McQueen (the animated Macca?) in the Piston Cup finals, where he did a fuel only stop. Didn't want to win the race by a whole lap; wanted to give the folks some sizzle!

LOL you guys are out of control!! Spending 45 mins to pin a number to your skinsuits? For what? Save 5 total watts on a 40km TT course? You realize that's 45 minutes of your life you won't get back, right??
As I have said in other posts, the bike portion of a triathlon is NOT a TT for many reasons, the two biggest reasons are 1) a TT is a standalone event (no follow on event like, I dunno, a marathon and 2) the distances of a HIM or IM bike split is totally not comparable to a TT event in cycling.
On the TdF this year, the longest TT was (I believe) 53 km. Compare that to the 180k km distance in an IM and it's obvious that the "rules" that apply to a TT event don't all apply to the bike leg of a triathlon.
I guess for us poor slobs who like to enjoy racing and are not worried about the drag coefficient of everything, we'll just never understand the joys of the minutiae of bike aerodynamics.
Lighten up Francis!!
