I haven't read anything about it, but did she get a Kona slot by coming in 6th? This was her last chance, no?

I believe I read somewhere that Lisa got the last spot and Des was SOL.

She placed second at the Ironman 70.3 Boise (which is a qualifier for Kona) this past June. Hopefully that finish is high enough to have all ready qualified her for Kona.

There are no 70.3 pro qualifiers for Kona aside from Monaco and Clearwater. Des should just take a break and recharge for next year, do an early IM like Oz or NZ and then have legs for Kona. I've said it before on a previous thread when she raced the Austin marathon and said it again after Boston. If Des wants to be a marathoner, that is fine, but if she wants to regain her form in Kona, doing "fresh marathons" is not the ticket and doing multiple IMs per year is not the best way to go. I hope to see her back in the Kona podium soon.

Cali, Honu, eagleman, and maybe St croix are Kona qualifiers. Boise was not.

Those races have Kona slots for age groupers, not pros.

Really? Maybe the WTC just decided to make Boise a qualifier for '09... it's too bad b/c Desiree had a strong race there this yr.
Hopefully she at least earned a spot to the 70.3 championship in Clearwater. While she might miss Kona this yr, the 70.3 championship (Nov) gives her plenty of time to dial in her training and prep for a strong showing in Nov.

With the exception of Clearwater, there are (to my knowledge) NO pro slots for Ironman Hawaii at 70.3 events. That is any 70.3 event. And even at Clearwater, there has only been one spot each of the past 2 years for Ironman Hawaii, and it went to the winner of the men's and women's pro field.
So, unless she picked up a spot in Canada at the Ironman, I don't think that she has an Ironman Hawaii spot.

I think she is getting in via the "Hottie Exception". What sponsor or RD wouldn't want to see her ripped, bare abs running down Ali'i ?

She skipped Timberman to race in Penticton, as it was her last shot to get a Kona slot for this year.....

Yes, Des got the first roll down slot as 2nd and 5th declined and the others had slots from previous races. I believe the final slot went to the ninth place pro at IMC.

If so, who wants to take bets on her putting together a decent race?
I may be old and conservative, but I can't help but wonder about the long term effects of the trend to load as many IM's as possible into a season. I try to understand the financial motivation, but can't seem to convince myself it's a good idea.
I have no problem with Desiree or Hillary or Chrissie, et all, but am curious about where they'll all be in 5-10 years.
Sigh........you know you are really getting old when you worry about the consequences of, not just your own, but everyone else's actions...............

Alison Fitch and Lisa Bentley both declined their slots. The 3 slots were taken by Desiree Ficker, Tracy Robertson and Sylvie Dansereau

Of those you list, only Eagleman qualifies for Kona AGers (30 slots), but NOT for Pros.
Des - you are welcome to bunk with me at IMWA in December and you will very likely get a slot there. We can compare Cronos.

The ironman live website doesn't make it very clear at all and suggests they aren't, but it appears that you are correct (when you look at the individual race's websites).

I was talking with Tom Evans about this topic just yesterday, after my attempt to pull off 2 IMs in 5 weeks. Tom is scaling back to one per year after this year. He did IMCDA and then is doing Florida. After that, he wants to be on the 1 per year program. He wants an active life for 20 years not just a few more...then again, he earns most of his income from being a dentist and does not have the need to bag prize money with a zillions IM's.

Thus far, since taking on this sport (obsession), I have managed 1 IM per year (2005/2006/2007), will do 1 in 2008 in 2 weeks. Seems to keep me fresh, injury free, and I am on a good progression. Only "so many" IM in this body of mine!
