Wow, amazing article. I am one of those folks who never wants to swim in the ocean for shark fears. Sure was not unhappy when Vancouver became a Duathlon.

There aren't any sharks near Vancouver.

Well, I was standing by the ocean in my wetsuit looking at the huge waves going you have to be nuts. What ocean has no sharks?

Sharks like warm water. As you probably noticed, the water in Vancouver isn't all that warm.

I wouldn't be so sure. From the Canadian Shark Research Laboratory:

Sharks are marine fishes that can be found throughout the world oceans, including in the Arctic. Only 19 shark species reside in Canadian Atlantic waters, 5 of which are considered to be occasional visitors. The remaining 14 species are seen with some regularity.

The blue shark (Prionace glauca), porbeagle shark (Lamna nasus), mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) and the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) are four shark species that are common in the Maritime region. These sharks are very important to the commercial and recreational fisheries here in Canada. The blue shark is sought after as a sport fish while the porbeagle, mako and spiny dogfish are part of a commercial fishery. All of these sharks are the subject of considerable research at our laboratory.
The Canadian Shark Research Laboratory at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography is responsible for research and stock assessment on the shark species found off of the eastern coast of Canada, particularly those that are fished commercially or recreationally. Ongoing research on the biology, abundance and population health of these magnificent fish is necessary in order to insure that catches are sustainable over the long term without endangering the health of the populations.

edit: and don't think you get away from our friend in SF, the Great White:

The white shark inhabits coastal and offshore waters of the continental shelf. Periodically it will wander into bays and harbours. This shark also inhabits waters around oceanic islands. The great white shark occurs in surface waters and down to a depth of 1280 meters (4,240 feet). It can easily tolerate temperature differences from sub arctic conditions to inshore tropical areas and probably has one of the widest habitat ranges of any fish.

I realize that not all sharks are warm water sharks, but as someone who grew up sailing off the coast of BC - I never once even saw a picture of anything bigger than a dogfish. I've swum in these waters my whole life, unless you think killer whales are out to get you, you have basically nothing to worry about.

It's good to see that there are people outside of the united states who would rather not believe what government scientists have to tell them.
