Crush the coconut, paddle the kayak or almost catch up? Can't Post

Not wanting to Hijack Dave's swim thread, I share his pain on swim technique. The TI swiminar I took stressed front quadrant, almost catch-up technique with a glide. I probably got it wrong because I have a hesitation when I stroke and slow before the next pull. Our current master's coach has me pulling through at the same time the other arm is recovering, sort of like bicycle cranks which has actually done more for keeping my body position up. I did catch a blurb by a swim coach on TV talking about crushing a coconut under your armpit motion and early recovery that is supposedly more economical than either the front quadrant or kayak style. Is there really any benefit to any of these or is it the stroke that fits the man, not the man that fits the stroke?

cue 100s of triathletes sitting at their desks moving their arms to work out how to crush a coconut under their armpits, and translate that action into any kind of swimming related motion

I've been swimming WAY too long to actually in broad terms about technique, but I see people hesitate all the time before placing their hand in the water. It kills me to see and is a huge waste of effort and efficiency. Three things that may improve it are:

Concentrate on rolling the shoulder of the recovering hand forward into the stroke, your body will rotate naturally with it and you gain a longer stroke.t gravity put your hand in the water.

Don't flail, but let gravity naturally pull your hand into the water. No effort required!

Try swimming with paddles, the curvy kind. I use them more strength, but they really promote hand entry which is the essential first step for good swimming...

yeah, I had to think about those, LOL.

To the op... it's like constant rotation... freestyle is a long axis stroke your hips are just rotating back and forth around the axis that is your spine. maybe thinking about that would eliminate the hesitation in your armstroke... because it's like pull recover extend your shoulder/hip opens up, catch, pull...

Here's my whining for the night: swim technique is easy for me to do but soooo hard to put into words.
