Butterfingers? Can't Post

I just posted a Timothy Carlson's opinion piece called Butterfingers and some of you may wonder how a track and field relay topic relates to triathlon.

In my view it really is about mastering technique and wouldn't we all like to see some more technique in transition where people drop the shoe/s instead of the the baton?

No argument here... 6 years of baton passing... junior high through high school and not a single missed hand-off, and only one disqualification... because I tripped over my own feet during the exchange.

My wife and I watched the relays... And BOTH of us, almost at the same time, said "We learned how NOT to do that in JUNIOR HIGH!"

Really, it's not that hard. There's no excuse for dropping the baton the way the men did. The following runner doesn't let go, the lead runner TAKES the baton...

The one technique that most people fail to master is the "mounting the bike with the shoes in the pedals" technique. Getting it right may save someone 2-3 seconds. Getting it wrong can cost them 2-3 minutes. If someone wants to do this in a race, it is how they should mount their bike every time they go out for a ride in training. Unless you are willing to do this you should mount the bike the same way you do everyday in training, IMHO.

One more comment. I am not so sure why you are emphasizing technique in transition as where improvement can be made as it consists of a total of, maybe, 5 minutes in a typical Ironman. Technique matters in everything we do if we want to be good at it, swimming, biking, and running is no different than transition or playing the piano. Those who state technique doesn't matter (the just run more, or just bike more crowd) are simply reinforcing what was said at the end of the article "Practicing bad technique for hundreds of reps will simply groove in the bad habits and guarantee another century of chaos in the exchange zone."

Frank, there are indeed many situations where improved or refined technique would help. The transition one is just an easy one to point out.
