Blackburn Trainer issues
Can't Post
I have a Blackburn Ultra track stand trainer...and I have been having an odd thing happen and wanted to see if anybody out there has a fix. When I am getting warmed up, the resistance goes form reasonable to peddle stopping hard in a split second...I ease off and it "clinks" then it is normal...then I start to spin up and wham - max resistance. This goes on for a while...I kick it a few times..and it seems to do okay after a while. Tonight it did it every time I slowed to a recovery pace and tried to spin back up - very frustrating!!

I know you can change the resistance settings by taking the drum apart and doing something with the ball bearings inside (but I never have with mine). Did you do this at some point? The "clunk" you are hearing is those ball bearings moving another plate inside the drum, which activates the resistance. You'll hear it "clunk" into place just as you start the spin-up, and when the unit is almost spun-down. Perhaps one of those is stuck or something.
Check the manual on how to take it apart for these settings and see if something got in there and jammed it up.

I had a similar issue, but it didn't go to pedal stopping only to "really hard". I took mine appart, cleaned off the dust and stuff and greased the center shaft slightly. It helped somewhat, but I've had to do it several times. Don't put too much on or there won't be enough resistance for hard workouts. That's my only suggestion. Hope it helps.

I had the exact same problem so I returned it for a new one which also had the same issue. Finally I returned it for a Blackburn Fluid and have been happy with it for sometime now.

I just returned my fluid without incident. The trainers have a lifetime warranty. You have to take it to a dealer though.

Before taking it back, try taking the drum section apart. There are six slots or 'races' where ball bearings move outward with centrifical force to make pedaling harder as the drum spins faster.
There are two 'settings':
1) Easy is with only 3 ball bearings in the slots (every other slot)
2) Hard is with all six ball bearings in the slots
With all six ball bearings in, it can be pretty hard to pedal once you get going.
If you have all six ball bearings in, definately try it with only three.
