Not saying there are no biases involved.....

But the video for the Rudy Wingspan shows how it fared in the tunnel vs others (it won, naturally)

As I understand it there are a handful of helmets that will trade off the title depending on the specifics of the person wearing them....ie depending on how low they are and how their lower back is curved on their bike.

So there isn't one helmet that's the 'best'.

But if we have a picture of you on your bike in your aero position it might help to recommend a helmet.

x2 I think it is really going to depend on how you ride, which helmet would be best for you. It also maybe depends on the conditions, as some have more vents than others.

from just eyeballing it, the new giro they used during the tdf or the rudy project wingspan seems ideal.

i dont like the idea of a long tail since your head naturally moves.

im still stuck with a regular road helmet until they make the wingspan bigger.

Currently looking at the Giro Advantage 2 TT helmet. It seems (given the name) designed for time trialist, but has anyone tried one out in a tri that can offer insight? My concern is ease of putting on/taking off in T1 & T2- anyone able to push one way or the other?
Thanks in advance.

It takes a bit of practice but the ear flaps do flex enough to let you put the helmet on easily - don't be put off by that at all.

I would not recommend this helmet. I have had two (one was a warranty replacement) that cracked right at the ear flaps. Especially if you have a slightly larger head. The helmet need to flex slightly outward to get the earflaps around my melon. Apparently this causes cracking.

I ordered a Rudy, but apparently one size does not fit all as I could not get it on.

Anyone know of another manufacturer making a shortish tailed helmet?

LOL! Fathead!

I've said that about the Wingspan quite a number of times on the forum here ... that one size does NOT fit all. My problem was the opposite of yours.

Nice replies from you all!!! And yes ther will be different opinions about witch helmet that suits me best, the long tail on the Spiuk Koronos does bother me a bit, Rudy Wingspan looks nice and could be worth a try.

for those who tried the Wingspan and have large heads..what size helmet (and what brand too I guess) do you normally use? I can get an exceptional deal on one right now and almost don't want to pass it up.

I would check your position on the bike. I believe a shorter tail is better for a more curved back and a longer tail is better for a flatter back.

Limar Chrono.Ditto.
Love my Chrono. Comfy, fast to get on and has been tested as rather aero for most people.

Re: Best aero helmet avalible?? [Petter] [In reply to] Can't Post

I currently have the following:

Wingspan
Bell Meteor II (not CPSP certified)
Limar Chrono Bullett TT
Specialized TT2
Giro Advantage 2

Hands down my favorite helmet to wear is the Specialized TT2, it's light, well ventilated, looks great and is super aero, the tail hugs my back perfectly. The Wingspan is nice also but looking at it front on I can't see how it is more aero than the others, it's big and there is a large gap/space around the perimeter of my face/ear flaps, I also found it loud while riding. The only drawback with the TT2 is that is has very light, flimsy straps though which can get twisted and turned around, that's why you sometimes see folks playing with their straps a bit while putting the helmet on, I believe this happened to Macca at IMH one year, I think he was wearing the TT2 at the time. I am thinking about trying to switch them out for more substantial straps.

They are all good helmets, the Bell is quite nice as well but not CPSC certified, I'm not sure if this matters but I'd hate to travel to a race and have an official not allow me to wear it. The Lazer is great as well.

Well it needs to be comfy, as it'll be on your noggin for 5+ hours.

You need to be able to see where you're going, as frankly a bunch of triathletes weaving all over the road requires a teensy bit of vision. ;-)

But you asked about aerodynamics, so...

It depends. Go to a shop that sells several, or get your buddies together, but find some way to amass multiple helmets in one location. (Your shop should be happy to do this, else find a new shop).
Get on the trainer, and take pictures or video from the side and front.

You're looking for a small gap between the tail and your back, you're looking for the helmet not to stick too far up in the air (although this is primarily a function of where you hold your head, it can very from lid to lid) and you don't want the tail up in the air in your typical riding position.

It's easy to adopt a position that looks/feels aero on the trainer, but you are only cheating/fooling yourself.

Re: Best aero helmet avalible?? [Petter] [In reply to] Can't Post

The Rudy Wingspan is nice but like other posters stated - one size does not fit all. I'd say a 7.25-7.75 is the ideal cap size. One thing that is nice about the Wingspan is that it has a nice sized vent in front and comes with 2 vent covers - 1 allows a limited amount of air flow and the other blocks it completely. So it is versatile for TRIs when temperatures warrant greater air flow and TT when you need everything to be fully aero. The tail isn't too long and there is plenty of room to get shades on with the lamb chops.
All training and no races makes Tom a dull boy.

I have/have used a Bell Meteor, Giro advantage 2, Spiuk Chronos, and Catlike Chrono Aero

The Catlike is the best I've uses so far. I'm actually ordering a 2010 Catlike in a few days. Not because there is anything wrong with mine but the 2010 helmet has a visor from the factory and looks awesome. Unfortunately it's not cspc certified:(

Hard to tell from the pics I found, but it looks like the Giro Atmos is the fastest Ironman helmet.

Oh and because if you win you are perfect at everything, Chrissie has the best flat changing technique in the world.

Tom, I just want to verify what you wrote. I've been waiting all winter to pull the trigger on a Wingspan, but have concerns on size. I wear a 7 5/8 hat size and generally fit a M or L cycling helmet. The Rudy website lists the Wingspan size as S-M, which concerns me.

To anyone who has tried one of these out: any advice on sizing?

Re: Best aero helmet avalible?? [AMT04] [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll double check my cap size tonight. I'll also try on my Wingspan while wearing a skull cap. I usually wear an under amrour skull cap or a halo head band to keep sweat from dripping into my eyes or onto my shades. I have a narrow face, which helps with the lamb chops and shades.

In my experience, LG makes a pretty big helmet.
