Anyone knew about WTC rules covering calfs? Quote | Reply

"Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races is mandatory and marking an athlete’s age group on the calf is part of that process. Athletes competing in our events rely on age group markings on calves to identify their competition. Ironman has been receiving an increasing number of complaints that compression socks and calf guards hide age group identification. At Hawaii 70.3 in June, Ironman experimented with eliminating age group calf markings on all athletes. This attempt at resolving the issue was met by even more complaints by the athletes. Therefore, beginning with the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship, garments that cover age group calf markings will not be permitted. Ironman’s goal is to design (and my job is to enforce) rules that provide the most level playing field possible.

Sincerely, Jimmy Riccitello"

FYI, this was not forwarded to me by Jimmy Riccitello (as a press release etc) but Jimmy has confirmed this.

i say anyone that looks at another's calf age indicator and then a makes a decision to let them pass or stay with them and actually RACE only if they are in the same age group is a pussy.
maybe they can start enforcing drafting, earphones, no shirts and the family finishing corral thing to!

AND..do they really serve a big purpose during racing? I thought they were generally used for recovery..or am I wrong?

Call me old school, but I always thought calfs should be branded the traditional way. But, before I get into this issue too deeply, I have to go back and reread the rule book. I wasn't aware that four legged critters were permitted in triathlons in the first place.

..."garments that cover age group calf markings will not be permitted."

So does that mean that it'd be ok to wear a transparent compression garment as long as you can read the number? Or does it mean that the marking can't be covered period?

Interestingly, at the IM races in Europe there is no body marking.

And if you ask, they look at you funny.

Thats not he only purpose. Locally I can compete for top AG places. In another state a competitor purposely put the wrong AG on his calf, making me really want to beat him even more. He was a better swimmer so I usually would need to pass him on the run. For him and anyone else in my AG I'd come up behind and rest a second or two then really pick it up as I passed. I wnated to look good passing them so they didn't try to go with me. Same at the finish line, I'm not the best sprinter, so I may race differently at the very end depending on if I was racing someone or not.

At Louisville it looked like for the most part they wrote the age ON the compression socks. I wondered if the race tried to mandate this... I ran is a loose running shirt and running shorts, i think this is the wave of the future, it sure was comfortable to run in what I always train in! Had my best IM run ever!

Interesting.

I wear longsleeves, so no shoulders. Wonder if that would be coming to an end.

Not that I have any plans for MDot anytime soon, other than volunteering.

Notice to RD's and bitchy AG'rs: there is no need whatsoever for body marking on AG athletes.

Pro's should have minimal marking (on arms) for media identification.

Re: Anyone knew about WTC rules covering calfs? [Herbert] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

But the number on the calf is washed off by the time you get out of the water anyway. On what % of competitors can you actually read any of the body marking by the time the run starts? Maybe 20%? Are they going to start making me shave my legs too to make it easier to read the numbers?

Do away with body marking entirely.

Besides, I have always wondered what the long term effects of absorbing indellible marker ink through the skin are. Study, anyone?

What if I have my age-group (or any other body marking) written on both my sock and my skin?

I would be prepared to trash a pair of socks for something like the World Champs

Who cares what the point of the rule is and if it makes any sense. As far as I'm concerned, any rule that prevents people wearing those nasty looking socks is a good one :) I saw people in Louisville wearing them on Sunday to WATCH the race in and the folks who wear them with sandals really make my 13 year old daughter laugh!

Saw someone at IMC with the number written on the white compression sock. At first, I didn't understand why they would 'wreck' a pair of socks, but now I know. hmmmm...

According to Jimmy R, no writing on the socks.

Altogether no issue for me as I only travel with them, hidden under pants. :-)
