Anyone else want in on "The 30 lbs in 30 days challenge" Can't Post

Been out of the tri-game for 18 months with herniated disc in low back - put on 30 lbs!!!!! Started "The 30 lbs in 30 day program" on Monday. Very basic plan - train in am b4 work; eat little-an-often; no eating after 5.30 pm; train before go to bed. Anyone else want to join The-lose-30-lbs-in-30-days-challenge is welcome. Wish me luck!!!!!!!!

If I met that challenge I'd be 6 ft tall and 130 pounds so I guess I'll pass.

Exactly my stats when I entered college in my days as a distance runner.

I'd like to try to gain 30lbs in 30 days, but only if it were muscle...and that might take a deadly amount of steroids, so I'll pass.

This is definitely not a healthy way to drop weight, and I'm not sure it's even possible since what you are proposing is a 3500 calorie DEFICIT each day for 30 straight days while at the same time training twice-per-day... Quick math would suggest you will be burning no more than 4000 calories-per-day and thus trying to survive on 500 calories intake per day. Instead you will probably end up losing a lot of water and muscle which will actually set you up for further weight GAIN.

30 pounds is a big goal, quite achievable if you commit to it, but you're going to need to give yourself a longer window. If you want to do this with any chance of success, aim for a MAXIMUM of 1-2 pounds-per-week, which is more like 4-5 months. Create a calorie deficit of no more than 500-1000 calories-per-day. You don't need 2 workouts-per-day to do this, basically just commit to daily exercise and sensible portion sizes of healthy food. Snack on fruits and vegetables, etc.

Don't think you have a chance in hell of doing that (and still be alive)....you have to burn 3500kcals to burn a pound, and so I would say that setting a goal of 10lbs per month will be more reasonable, if not still lofty, goal. At 10lbs per month, that is around 35,000kcals you need to burn above your metabolic rate. That is around 1000 per day (roughly anyways) which is possible.

As for me, I way 140lbs, but am looking to race in Australia at 137, so I will be there in spirit with you, if not the actual numbers. Good luck....

Correction guys:

3500 calories per pound of FAT, only 600 calories per pound of muscle.

He will be highly catabolic in his calorie deficit and will be able to lose 2-3lbs of MUSCLE per day...that is initially. Then the muscle loss and calorie deficit will slow his metabolic rate down. It will be a metabolic tug-of-war between the workouts he's doing and the calorie deficit.

He CAN lose 30lbs, but it will probably be 15-20lbs of muscle and the rest would be fat.

BTW, losing muscle isn't necessarily bad for a triathlete.

After finishing IMWI then Savageman (olympic) I've been on a two week vacation from training. I'm on the reverse and am working on putting on 1lb a day.

Given that in his original post he claims to have gained 30 pounds in 18 months after being "out of the tri game", chances are he put on more than 30 pounds of fat and lost some muscle mass in the process.

Bottom line, without any information about current body composition (weight, percentage body fat, etc.) it's hard to make any meaningful recommendations. But losing 30 pounds of whatever in 30 days, while possible, just doesn't seem sensible.

Re: Anyone else want in on "The 30 lbs in 30 days challenge" [mlennox] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think wheter or not he could do it depends entirely on where he is starting. I know the science doesn't back this up but my own experience suggests that the science might start to make less sense the more out of shape one is. Years ago I was 325 pounds. I started working out with weights and doing 45 min of cardio 5-6 days per week coupled with really healthy eating probably around 1500-1800 calories per day. I wasn't following any crazy diet just eating healthy and getting lots of exercise. In three months I went from 325 pounds to 275. I seriously doubt that as out of shape as I was that I was in a calorie deficit of close to 2000 calories per day which is what it would have taken to hit these numbers based on needing to burn 3500 calories to work off a pound of fat. And I know I wasn't burning muscle since I was lifting regularly and definitely getting more fit in that area. I did feel like crap for the first 3 weeks but after that I started to rock-n-roll.

I do believe that the science is rock solid once you get to a certain point but I think the more out of shape one is the more quickly the body will rid itself of excess weight. I think that is why it becomes so much more difficult to loose those last 5 pounds than it is to loose the first 50. Just speaking from experience here but if the poster is way out of shape he might be able to loose 20 pounds that first month as long as he aims to eat healthy and get at least 1500 calories a day. 30 pounds, however, just isn't possible (I don't think) without causing more long term issues.

I was hoping this was a bench press, squat or deadlift challenge.

Dropping 30lbs in 30 days = not smart. Even a boxer or wrestler used to such a drop would face a tremendous health risk.

He can probably get there pretty quicky and relatively safely via ketosis.

The problem isn't losing the 30lbs (OF FAT) but of keeping it off and not losing/gaining muscle.

I played football at 215 and wrestled at 170, I think it can be done. It just ain't pretty.

Of course, I was 17 at the time and I could afford to be comatose between workouts. Wake up, run for an hour, sleep-walk through school, wrestle for 2 hours, then go home, sleep. Lots of fun.

A lot of the guys I wrestled with are obese now.

Boy isn't that the truth, I played football at around 210, I'm 214 20 years later. I had a good buddy who was a stud wrestler at 165 he's got to be pushing 300 now.

You want incentive to lose weight in 30 days? All you have you have to do is get lost on some remote island with no food and a bunch of hotties and vote off a dude a week until it's just you and the girls.Wait someone already thought of that didn't they?
Seems to work though.

This sounds like a recipe for another herniated disc and 28 months out of the tri-game.

But, back when I was 22, I lost almost 30 pounds in just under 3 months without changing my diet and running ALOT. I probably could have lost it a bit faster had I eliminated the 3 Mcy D's chocolate chip cookies I had every day after my workouts. By the time I got home, the bag they came in was transparent with all the grease soaked into it.

Either that or a self induced coma. Really, how bad could it be? Give instructions to the medical staff that you want just enough calories to keep you alive. After 30 days, presto! You're looking lean and fit along with being really well rested! ;)

I don't know about a coma as I've spent enough time dreaming about girls on sunny beaches.I'd prefer the survivor method where we all hang out in the sun ,starving and waiting for the girls to lose enough weight so their bikinis fall off.Mind you that is pretty much what every backpacker in Australia is doing.
